I'm planning to buy one (early 1970s model) and would want to know the fair market price for such a car. Is it a good investment?

Look here for prices in the classified's for a good market rate and condition, and there is a ton of literature about the type 3's:

It is a site dedicated to aircooled VW's!!!! A type 3 is an average investment. It depends on how much money you want to put into it.

This model is called Type 3. They never called it Beetle People did. That was Type 1 sedan, type 2 was the van.
It handles better on the road than the bug. Fair market price depends on how many "VW nuts" are in the neighborhood.

The samba.com is a very good source of extended info on the type III vw's. Be very inquisitive about what kind and what state of a vw type III youre looking for. Avoid the ones that have been smacked into and that have rusted out pans, for they dont make pan half replacements for them, in most cases you would have to find a donor car to get a decent pan half from, for a bigginer vw person i would avoid extinsive panel replacments on those type of vw's, it can get pretty hairy. My advice is keep it simple and look for one out of the mid states area to buy like in tx,ok, or az if even ca. those are the ones to most likey have the least to no cancer on the cars. Happy hunting.

Check the links below for more info on the 311 and 411 VW's. Although these are somewhat rare cars, the cost should be in the $ 4K to $ 6K range. Check ads in Hemmings, and the VW Vortex classifieds.

Cars are never a good investment. But if you're looking for a price guide check out kelleybluebook.com or nada.com (I think). Both should help you decide what a good price is.
