My recommendations for hotels in Bangkok are: Woraburi Sukhumvit, Bangkok City Suite and Samran Place. I stayed in Woraburi Sukhumvit 3 times, Bangkok City Suite 2 times & Samran Place once. But my BEST hotel is still Woraburi Sukhumvit. There are night entertainment centres & massage parlours down the whole stretch of road with a big night entertainment place called NANA ENTERTAINMENT PLAZA, with erotic & naked dancers in pubs/clubs. And if you know, you happen to live in the most famous & prominent area in Bangkok is called Sukhumvit.
Woraburi has affordable hotel prices. So are Samran & Bangkok City Suite. They've great services and wonderful breakfasts daily. Mostly importantly, Woraburi & Bangkok City Suite have swimming pools. And Bangkok City Suite offers FREE 30mins internet accessdaily. The accessibility to major shopping malls and main roads are great as well. Both hotels are highly recommended!!!!!!!!!

You asked if there are any cheap hotels or hostesl in Bangkok. Well... the answer is... THERE IS A LOT OF CHEAP HOTELS AND HOSTELS. Just go to a travel site and take your pick. Everyone who answers here will have their favourites to recommend to you so you will end up with all different ones to chose from anyway.
We can not make decision for you. YOU must decide for yourself. If we pick one and you went there and you don't like it then you will try to blame us later.
It really depends on how much you are prepare to spend. You can get REALLY REALLY cheap places - but be warned - you get what you pay for. Some hostels are cheap but they will not have air-condition. Keep that in mind. Bangkok is hot all year round.
Try the sites others have suggested. The website I use is http://www.sawadee.com
Best of luck in your search.

Are you traveling there from America or somewhere? If you are and your money is worth more Thailand then I wouldn't look for a cheap hotel because I had to stay at this hotel called the 99 hotel something like that but it was the only one we could book because everywhere else was full. Well there were prostitutes in front of our hotel, they hit on my 15 year old little brother, and plus the hotel owner wasn't very friendly and she tried to charge us for everything possible! Oh the bathroom sucked including the water you had to shower in. I can't really remember what the hotel was called but there was one that was really nice and it was next to that 99 hotel. It's near the big buddhist temple. This hotel is hard to miss because it's big, but I would recommend that. Sorry I can't remember the name, but definitely don't go with a cheap hotel!

There are tons of them everywhere. You don't need to book at the airport. Guest Houses are all over the place. Guesthouses from 150 baht a night. Could give you more specifics if we new what part you were looking to stay at and what type of activities you wanted to do. If this is a "party" trip..stay at the Nana Hotel, Landmark or Majestic, all starting around 1000 baht a night. You can find many of these good rates at the door or better ones on the internet

Business Inn on Soi11/1and Sukhumvit Road. 650 baht per night. Save your money on the room and spend it elswhere. Once in Bangkok you are hardly in the hotel anyway. Business inn has clean room and shower. Soft bed. For the discount traveler, no better deal right in the heart of the action in BKK

one tip is to book at the airport. Downstairs at the new airport there is a hotel/tourist help counter, and they get you a lower price than you get at the door.
