On www.familysearch.org I was able to trace one line of my family back to about 30 BC or so. It was a line from European royalty so I must assume that it's somewhat accurate. I urge anyone who hasn't tried this site to give it a whirl, it's run by the Mormons and it's free. I mean completely and utterly free - no registration, no pop up ads, no spam - free. I found a lot of information on my family tree that I had no idea existed.

I spent 3 months, 9 hours a day in the geneology library in Salt Lake City. (Yep, Mormon country) That library is amazing!
I have : Bromley 1285, Chettleton 1320, Scoos 1450, Spencer 1250, Redgrave 1475, Morse 1434, Thornburgh 1500, Lewis 1638, Belt 1615.
I have Cromwell in 3 different lines and that is back to 1066.
2 of my ancestors, Whalley and Hampden signed the beheading order for King Charles the First.
Thats only my maternal English line. I've got French to 1635, Scot to 1750. Cherokee only to the Trail of Tears.
It can take a lifetime to trace your line, but it sure is fun!

One side of the family goes back to 1743 here in the states, the other 17th century in Ireland/Scotland.
Trying to trace back the other to when they got here, also from Germany sometime around 1736 or so.

Some lines only as far as the early 1800s but others back to about 1000 A.D. My primary line (last name) has been traced back to about 1590.

On some of my mom's lines, we can go back quite far as there is some linkage to the mayflower and european royalty (possibly way back, too), while her danish family tree so far only goes to about 1830. On my dad's side, we can get back into the 1500s on some of his lines, while on others we can only get back to 1815 or so.
There are lots of good mainly free sources, like familysearch.org and rootsweb (especially World Connect!)

Theoretically, back to Adam and Eve... If you can trace your tree back to a famous royal, such as Charlemagne, you will find lineages going back to ancient Israel, and to Adam and Eve (although the evidence is scant).
