If they are impacted (where they can't come in on their own):

1. They could crowd your existing teeth and make them crooked.
2. They could damage the roots on the tooth in front of them and you could possibly lose THAT tooth.
3. The roots on the upper wisdom teeth could grow up into your sinuses.
4. The roots on the lower wisdom teeth could grow into the nerve in your lower jaw, causing nerve damage.

The rest of your teeth get weak and crumble. I never used to have a cavity in my life til the wisdom teeth started coming through. Since then have had a few holes come up near the gums on a couple of teeth and the molars are softer. Though get a good dentist. One dentist I went to said the best thing was to get them all out, and the next dentist I went to said as long as they are not causing you any pain, then let them stay. Thing is, food sometimes gets trapped in them, and the wisdom teeth go rotten in the gums which apparently, so I've been told, is not fun.

If you have room for them to come in, there is no reason to have them out. If your dentist said that they are tipped and not going to come in, you really should have them out.

http://www.members.aol.com/swf08302/wizdk.jpg shows one reason why. This is what can happen by the time you are 40 or 50 if you leave a wisdom tooth in place when it is impacted. The red arrows on the x-ray show the grey area that has decayed due to the wisdom tooth being present under the gum. The tooth shown is the exact same tooth shown in the x-ray, but turned so you can see the cavity. Food and bacteria can get down there and you can't clean it out. Eventually, it makes a cavity in the tooth next to the wisdom tooth and makes it so you have to have BOTH teeth removed.

The fact that wisdom teeth never stop growing and they shift your other teeth, it could cause lots of problems depending on how your mouth already is and if there is room for the teeth to come in. See your dentist and if in doubt, get a second opinion from another dentist.

I think it might be bad in the fact that if your mouth is already small. Then your teeth may not have enough room to take them on. I know that is my case anyways. OH! And they will hurt as you get older and they will cost you BIG $$$ to ease the pain and so on. I am sure a dentist could give you a better answer.

But there you go.

well for one they are harder to brush so they can get cavities easier and also spread to other healthy teeth. second the can cause crowding in your mouth and undo what your braces and retainers did (thats what happended to me). also if they have not come in yet when the do come in the teething pain hurts pretty bad. hope this helps. if you want more info talk to a dental surgeon or your regular dentist.

Get your wisdom molar checked

These were the views which came out from today’s chapter of research project of Mission Smile project of Thind Dental Clinic at the Giaspura .The occasion was a dental check up *** treatment camp under this research project. the research project aimed to find out dental problems plaguing the different areas of ludhiana.the camp was held in a series of camp at gurudwara Shri guru ravidass singh sabha giaspra .Dr Rajan bir singh Thind who is the Director consultant of the Mission Smile Project told this correspondent that around 338 patients were examined out of which 256 persons were in the age group of 18 – 45.The team of the doctors found out maximum of these age group was having it, s third molars badly decayed . According to Dr Thind the root cause of this was evolution & lack of care & knowledge on part of the persons involved. Acc to evolution theory Day By Day the almighty God is improving the human breed .Day By Day we are getting more advanced in terms of teeth & jaws also . As our food habits are changing to softer & softer things so The Almighty God is providing us with lesser number of teeth & Smaller Jaws. But this is a continuous procedure so finally we get 4 types of people 1, persons with 28 teeth & smaller jaws. 2. persons with 28 teeth & larger jaws. 3. Persons with32 teeth & larger jaws. 4. persons with 32 teeth & SMALLER JAWS. Now there occurs no problems in case of first three type of peoples but the fourth category of persons are the most affected because there is no space for third molars to come into the oral cavity. So this type of patients get a great deal of problems because of third molars Dr Thind further added that these third molars were used for chewing the very hard food like raw flesh by the primitive man . but as the primitive man is changing into eating softer foods so the third molar is no longer needed & The Almighty God is making it disappear from our oral cavity. When asked that whether this molar has anything to do with wisdom, Dr Gurinder Thind clarified that this was a misnomer as it has nothing to do with wisdom of a person . but the reason behind this misnomer was that these teeth came into the oral cavity at the age of 18-25 years by which time the person is supposed to get wisdom so the misnomer is there .the second molars come in the age of 12-13 years of age & this age is considered to be teen age , but by the age of 18 -25 the person, tissue becomes thick & tight so when this tooth erupts it causes problems .Also as this particular tooth erupts on the most back ward portion of the oral cavity so it is not easy to brush it properly & this uncleanness increases the infection in the particular spot . Further if the person is having 32 teeth & smaller jaw size then the situation turns into bad condition. The worst fallout of this particular condition is TRISMUS in which condition the person is unable to open the jaws, cannot eat properly, cannot talk properly .Dr Thind advised the general public to get their periodic check up done so that their dentist can find out the disease in it” preventive phase only .

It depends - sometimes they can stay there forever - providing that there is enough room in your mouth to cater for them!

However - if you dont have any room the likelyhood is that your dentist will suggest taking them out, other reasons for their removal would be decay and corrosion.

can get infected or push your other teeth and make them crooked, sucks, someone told me you could pull your other teeth forward when flossing to try and make room for them over time.
