I'm not trying to stir anything up, and I'm not trying to bash anyone, but does homosexuality make sense to any belief? Even if you do not believe it is wrong religiously, as animals we still can't reproduce that way, which is what the only other reason besides religion I can think of. I'm not trying to come up with something that stumps people, just so they get mad; I really want to hear answers.

I'm not trying to judge, Jett. I was just wondering. That is interesting, though, do you know where I can continue my research?

Thats why I asked this question, The Lord Amen Ra, so I can learn more about it.

These answers are really good, thanks.

Just to say, now that most of the posts are finished, I am a Christian, and I do not agree with homosexuality. I do hate the sin, but not the sinner. Thanks for the good answers, and I will leave this for others to choose, unless there aren't many votes, in which case I will choose one of you. God bless you all.

If you're honestly asking, there are some who theorize that the purpose of heterosexual intercourse is to produce homosexual individuals!

In nature (and our society is no exception), there are many, many animals who spend the bulk of their time trying to reproduce. They develop the characteristics necessary to attract mates. They build nests. They rear young. These activities are not without cost. Often they are lethal. In some species they are invariably so.

But what about individuals which do not rear young? They have a lot of extra energy and time on their hands. In some species, they assist others with their tasks (benefitting society). In some they serve as guards (benefitting society). And many other tasks. Most of which are beneficial.

It's not hard to draw a parallel to our society. How many artists are homosexual? How many scientists? Free thinkers? Is it not possible that homosexual people actually produce a disproportionate amount of our cultural content? I'll leave that for you to think about for a while.

Your question mostly asked about religion. The Unitarians not only tolerate homosexuality, their General Assembly charged their members with the tasks of actually opposing laws which attempt to criminalize any aspect of it, fight misinformation, and otherwise try to end what they see as persecution of homosexuals (link 1).

And that's just for starters. Most sects of Buddhism (as someone mentioned) have no problem with it. Some Christian and Hindu sects are okay with it. In many aboriginal faiths they are actually revered and become spiritual leaders. And, of course, there were numerous ancient societies where homosexuality was considered perfectly normal, and their state theologies certainly agreed with them.

Stepping away from the fact that God very clearly calls the behavior an abomination, I would have to say that it makes little sense from a nature standpoint.

Even if some animals show signs of homosexual behavior, this proves nothing. As another poster commented, animals also kill each other and are cannibals. Using the logic of comparing us to the animal kingdom, you would have to assume that these things are also natural and can't be helped because we are "born that way."

To take this a little further--I have had one very close family member die of AIDs. Yes, he was gay. Yes, he had unprotected sex with multiple partners and could have also caught this disease from a woman with that same behavior. But what was miraculous about his story was that he did, in the last few years of his life, have a relationship with his Lord and Savior. He came out of the gay lifestyle and he married his childhood sweetheart. Obviously, their intimacy was limited but they were very happy. She was ill too and died not long after him--but not from AIDs.

Because I have seen several people come out of this lifestyle, I am inclined to think that it is a definite choice.

God loves homosexuals just like he loves heterosexuals. It's the behavior that is a sin. I'm sorry if this offends anyone. I didn't write it. God did. It's in the Bible.

Well, it's an alternative to marriage, as it was in the 1800's for women who wanted sexual liberation without having the social restraint of marriage (aka "Boston Marriages"). . "Homosexual relationships" are common in many animals, and not just humans. I've witnessed this for myself in horses, dogs, even ducks. SO, it must serve some purpose in Nature if it exists. God created Nature, and so created homosexuality. The fact that some religions banish it and others allow it is quite baffling for me, really. I guess it's just a means of restricting behavior to fit the average of a society and oppress the non-conformists. Cultures whose members exist with less hatred of their sexuality have religious doctrines that are more lenient.

You have to stop and think that we are the top species on this planet. We have no natural predators that regularly feed on us, we have advanced to the point of treating and preventing many virulent diseases, We have medical breakthroughs that ensure more healthy births and longer lives to the point where we are now beginning to over populate our planet in many areas. For just one moment, imagine that possibility that a certain percentage of people are being created/born homosexuals as nature's way of balancing and controlling the population?

Not my choice but I hardly fear for lack of population . What's a little harmless deviant activity as long as it doesn't come to my house or step on my toes .If genetic research produced three legged chickens I wouldn't have to switch to dark meat either.
Sense may be asking for too much unless you address gays only
peace out

Not all sex leads to procreation.

Animals will have homosexual sex which does not reproduce. So, it's only natural that humans do too.

And actually, humans have a lot of sex that does not lead to procreation. Oral sex, masturbation, and BDSM have all been practiced by healthy sexual humans, and none of them "make sense" if you consider reproduction as the only logical result of sex.

So, if you look at it that way, then homosexuality does not make sense, but then, neither does any of the hundreds of acts we practice.

Now that you mention animals, there have been numerous cases of animal homosexuality. On a primate level, through the study of identical twins we now know that it is largely genetically based. So, while it might not 'make sense' to you, I wouldn't be so quick to judge homosexuals.

EDIT: homosexuality is not on the rise... Even with the persecution they receive now, do you know what it was like in many areas in the past?

1-There was no way of measuring homosexuals until recently
2-Even if there was, most would not come out until recently.
3-There have been homosexuals all throughout historical times.

Homosexuality is not new. It has been around for a long, long time. It was accepted in ancient Japan and many other cultures as well as Buddism. Abrahamic Religions seem to have a problem with it due to the pro-creation factor.
