One, they taste good. Two, Coca Cola has been around for so long that there's that name recognition. Three, great advertising and commercials. Four, a lot of people boycotted Pepsi in the 80's because they weren't paying proper wages so people switched to Coke and didn't go back after the Pepsi issues were resolved. Five, Diet Coke appeals to people who like soda, but think they're making a healthy choice choosing something with "Diet" in the title when in reality, the aspartame that sweetens the soda turns into sugar in the body, and it actually makes you want to eat, so it kind of goes against the whole dieting thing.
UPDATE: For the person who said she wished Coke still came in glass bottles, they still have them. I don't know if it was just for Christmas, but they had them in the grocery stores where I live in NY in the original 8 oz size glass bottles with the lids you need a bottle opener to pop off. We got them as a special treat. You can still get them if you look around or maybe request them at your local grocery store and are willing to pay a little more for them. Personally, I think the Coke tastes better out of glass than plastic and they're so cute and just the right size, as opposed to 20 oz. plastic Coke bottles or 12 oz. cans.

They taste good and coke has been around for a long time. Back in the 20s I believe they actually added cocaine to coke hence the nickname "coke" to coca cola.
Also Santa is red and white, why? Because coke made santa that way and society adopted the red and white version of santa.

The caffeine? All the advertising? Those are just guesses. I personally don't drink much Coke or Pepsi or any of their other flavors. I mainly stick to the flavored sparkling waters. I actually am doing a study like that myself comparing the nutritional value of four different soft drinks. I got the idea after someone at my worked made fun of my choice in soft drinks. She thought it was absolutely hilarious that mine contained more sugar than most and then said, "Well at least it's natural." It got me to thinking, just how much more nutrituos is my choice, which is the 365 brand sold at organic food stores compared to drinks such as Sprite and Mountain Dew that people see so many ads for.
I have been looking up their websites but I am not yet done. If you are interested in my findings, email me.

Advertisment, marketing, and a good product. While Coke certainly tastes good there are other cola products and other flavors that could potentially be as popular.
It's the mastery of sales and marketing that puts them well above the rest, I mean really Fago makes lot's of flavors but when was the last time you saw a Fago ad? Or a 7up ad for that matter, they are still around but at one time leaders in their market.

Many many years ago Coke was made with cocaine and they also did the red & white santa theme, I sure wish that we could still get coke in the glass bottles and made the old fashion way, I'm in my 50's and I remember it being the only soda in our house and in most relatives homes also, nothing like having your fried egg hashbrowns and a small ice cold bottle of coke for breakfast, and I seem to be okay lol

One reason is marketing. Another is that it is part of popular culture to drink coca cola. It could also be that we have developed an aqquired taste for coca cola. Plus, it doesn't taste bad!

Because it's been around since 1886 (diet coke since 1982) and it's available all over the world. Plus it's just good.
Take care!

Coke is so popular due to a uniquely American tradition known as "marketing." In plain terms, marketing is the art of convincing someone that they simply must have a product, whether it's sensible, useful, or healthful, or not.

Besides the test making it so popular, I believe the name COKE has a lot to do with it. It captured everyone attention, easy to remember, easy to ask for as compared to another brand named Pepsi.
