Trusted when it comes to its claims about an eternal God etc. I think its quite an understandable question given the nature of the claims by them

I don't know my friend but I can see it starting with the traveling snake oil salesman in the 1800's. Whoever started it you can be sure it was about money. Use fear to scare the simple minded into giving you their money.

Jesus said to go into all the world and preach the gospel, baptizing them in his name. The modern evangelical movement has gotten progressively more off the mark, as the pure doctrine has been mixed with man made doctrines and pagan practices that lead to false beliefs, which had made their way into Christianity early on, have become exaggerated to the point that for many they have supplanted the foundational beliefs in Jesus Christ deity, that he was born of a virgin, that he was sinless, and even that he died for the sin of man. The Revelation talks about Mystery Babylon becoming the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. The great delusion is not coming from the world but from out of Christianity itself. Christ is the truth, but much is done in the name of Christ that is not truthful. The delusion is for those who say they believe in Jesus but show no evidence of their faith; the workers of iniquity whom the Lord will say to depart from him because he never knew them.
When a person begins to see that there is sin in their life and deep down they know that something has to be done, that something isn’t right and that if this feeling is true then there will be hell to pay, so to speak, and they acknowledge God and confess their sin to him and believe that he has taken their sin onto himself and atoned for it, then that is the conversion experience. That’s the reason to evangelize. It’s as valid as any other lofty activity in which imperfect people involve themselves. And the most important for those into whose lives it brings peace.

The most authoritative historian on Evangelicalism and Fundamentalism in America is George Marsden at Notre Dame. I would look into his work.
Here is a wiki link for evangelicalism: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evangelicalism

C: Since when are recent (within a 100 year span) things not to be trusted? Pity those who buy a 2007 vehicle to drive around. What about "new and improved"?

Evangelical Christians believe that the Bible is literally true, inerrant, and the only authority for Christian faith, and that accepting Jesus Christ as one's only Lord is the only way to salvation. It's been around since Jesus. Nothing new.

Apparently, it started in the 1st century.
Act 21:8 And the next [day] we that were of Paul's company departed, and came unto Caesarea: and we entered into the house of Philip the EVANGELIST, which was [one] of the seven; and abode with him.

old.
