all answers are great. most of the money given to students comes through the FAFSA. grants like pell and eops are need based and not given out frivously. I mean really need based. Some schools offer scholarships for good grades, outstanding community service or extra-curricular activities. If you've exhausted these possibilities...fast web. ESPECIALLY the Coca Cola scholarship. This is almost guaranteed. Yes it takes time to write the essays, but in the end it's worth it. Eventually, like I did, you can declare yourself an independant, sucks for the parents, but your aid triples. Apply for work study, ASAP at the school or through the career center. If your parents have OUTSTANDING medical bills, make an appt. with a financial aid advisor and uses the bills as proof. There are very special awards given to students who demonstrate severe need. Of course, no one tells you this. The process involves an application, a statement including the amount of bills, and then if approved, a special awarded amount. Lastly, think about the PLUS loan; otherwise named the Parent Loan. Now this is a great solution for you, because the limit is pretty high per year. Unfortunately, your parents do have to qualify and it's interest accruing, but it's an option. Now, if your parents are denied, there's still hope. You are automatically qualified for the unsubsidized loan. This loan is also interest bearing, during the school year, but has a $4000 maximum. I've used it. I think that the most important thing to remember with paying for college, is dont accept more than you need. If you're AID is more than you need, decline any extra. This will decrease how much you have to start paying back after graduation. IF you receive money from grants and scholarships, hell yea take it :). GOOD LUCK!!!

If you go to school in California your best bet is to attend a 2 year school first, the low cost even with the recent tuition hikes will be covered by the FAFSA even if you only qualify for loans. If you are already past that point look for a state school if you qualify for a Cal Grant because that should cover most if not all of the tuition. You can also look at private schools as they offer a lot of internal scholarships based on previous grades and how desirable a student you are. Besides those easy routes you can look for private scholarships through www.fastweb.com and www.scholarship.com, both sites are free but you will be required to do some work to apply and are not guarenteed any funds. Good luck.

Sign up for a fastweb account. It's free, and they email scholarship applications that you might be a good candidate for right to you. I don't know the exact address, so just google fastweb and it will come up. Also, call admissions at the schools you have applied to and ask about academic or need based scholarships for incoming freshmen; the only reason I'm managing to go to college right now is the fact that I get over $4,000 a year from the school as an academic scholarship.

Take out a subsidized loan. They do not go based on credit, so you are almost guarenteed.

You also have up to 6 mos after graduating before payments start. Just don't borrow more than you can handle...it adds up fast.

I got most of my money for college through military service. You automatically get the GI Bill and can also get the College Fund on top of that, as well as other possible amounts.
