This is a direct quote from the website referenced below: When tension is applied to the joint, cavitation occurs within the synovial fluid. This creates an unstable condition as the pressure within the bubble is lower than that of the surrounding fluid. Because the joint separation occurs at a high rate the net flow of synovial fluid is toward the low pressure regions, with a collapse of the vapor phase of the cavity. There is a release of vibratory energy, which may be responsible for the cracking sound.

Basically, it's the same as popping an air bubble in the fluid that surrounds the joint. It's not immediately dangerous, but may cause some long-term effects. The entire article is quite interesting, yet the data is inconclusive since there have been very few controlled studies on the subject and so many variables exist.

The sounds your joints make when you crack them are usually caused by one of two things.

When you crack your knuckles or whatever, you expand the joint capsule, which houses sinovial fluid (the fluid that lubricates your joints and allows them to move easily) and many gases like oxygen and nitrogen. The expanding capsule lowers the capsule's pressure, and the gases escape the fluid, causing the noise.

Another possible cause of the noise is the moving and tightening of ligaments and tendons. The stretching or the moving and returning to place of these joint elements may also be the source of the cracking sound.

Its perfectly healthy for your joints to pop and crack. That it your joints and the "pads" between your joints releiving pressure that is built up by daily life. You only need to worry if they hurt or if any of your joints look "deformed" that may indicate an injury.

I have the same problem.

It began having noise each step I take, after I have injured myself playing basketball and doing exercise extremely..

I am not sure the reason of cracking, sometimes it can be stretching, sometimes it can be lack of moisture betwen the joints.
I feel hurting on days with high atmophere pressure only.
