Many people just dont have the time to sit a read anymore, so many rely on sermons preached to them for any kind of biblical learning. And most people aren't afraid of being taught wrong because they dont have enough teaching to know what is right or wrong. As long as people dont read, they will listen to anyone who talks smooth enough.

Not every person has a good backgroun og religion and history. If you read the Bible by yourself, who knows what you can imagine. Those who have a strong background in theology can easily explain the symbols that appear in the Bible. Otherwise, there will be no more religion. Most likely there would only be what each and every person thinks about the Bible

The account of the Ethiopian Eunuch should answer your question. At Acts 8:26,Philip was told by Jehovah's angel to go south and there he came across a Ethiopian Eunuch who had been toJerusalem to worship.....v28:"but
he was returning and was sitting in his chariot and reading aloud the prophet Isaiah. So the spirit said to Philip'Approach and join yourself to this chariot'.Philip ran alongside and heard him reading aloud Isaiah the prophet, and he said'Do you actually know what you are reading?'.He said 'Really, how could I ever do so,unless someone guided me?'And he entreated Philip to get on and sit down with him.
Reading is fine but to understand what you are reading and getting the sense of it is another matter.Of course, caution is needed. You would not allow just anyone to teach you. There is one organisation that is world known for their preaching and teaching work and they are Jehovah's Witnesses.Jehovah's Witnesses have a thorough and accurate understanding of the Holy Scirptures because they have God's Holy Spirit operating on the organisation. They offer free home bible studies to whoever would want one.

At first it just seems so long and possibly boring. Took me two and a half years. It's a good book. I'm thinking of reading The Koran next. It really is different when you read it yourself.

This is a great Q! the only reason I have found over the years is that if they are led by another they feel they have some form of debility when they face God.
