I am trying to adopt my stepdaughter. But court costs have already been high with the termination of parental rights of the birth father, and I need the stepparent petition for adoption in Washington state. I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction at little or no cost. Thank you!

Thanks for the quick answers. I have already attempted a legal aid office, various websites, the courthouse, and such. I just can't afford $500+ for an attorney or paralegal to draw them up. We already went through step one - now is just the adoption petition. Problem is stepparent adoptions in Washington are so rare - it isnt paperwork that is available in blanks. For the record - I live in Washington.

Here's a link.

In CA, step-parent adoptions are handled without attorneys. The Juvenile Probation Department handles gathering of the paperwork and the investigation... makes sure the signatures are completed. And then you'd file the petition with the Courts. Again, in CA, the forms are all available online, but you can also get them in packet form at the Courthouse. Call your local courthouse and see if they have such a packet... or if they have a "family Law Facilitator" that might be able to help.. that's also a great resource.

Looks like all adoptions are handled through DSHS... you might also call that local office...

Good Luck!

Go to your local court house and ask if they have the forms. Sometimes they have them but they can't help you fill them out but often they do have samples of how they should look - just fill them out, in the same fashion, and have them processed. If you're not from Washington then I'm not really sure how you would be able to obtain the proper forms.

See if your County has a legal aid office, if they do they can provide you with attorney help for free or at a very reduced rate, becuase you have to have it go to court and have an attorney in most states.
