1st of all, the constitution says that you have a right to bear arms. It is not perfectly clear as to what they meant by that. Did they mean guns, swords, nukes?

PROS

That being said, I am happier with citizens having firepower because if only authority had guns they could take complete control by force of the American people. We can revolt better with guns.

We can also shoot an intruder in our homes in seconds versus waiting for the police to arrive.

CONS
The cons are that innocent people are murdered everyday by irresponsible gun owners and criminals.

About 11000 people are murdered by guns in the U.S. each year.

In 1998, over 30,000 people died from gunshots in the U.S.

A gun kept in the home is 22 times more likely to kill a family member or a friend than it is to be used against an intruder.

10 children are killed by guns in the U.S. every day, on average.

No guns should not become illegal to the average citizen. The biggest con to that happening would be the fact that the right to bear arms is guaranteed to us. If we take that back away from the people, there will be a lot of angry people. You will end up with groups like the NRA and such going at it with the cops and the military because they cherish the right to have the weapons.

You will never be able to remove all the guns from the hands of people in this country. That is why another con of the whole thing is that it will cause more crime. It will be sort of like the alcohol prohibition back in the day. If you make the guns illegal, then you will have to start taking them from people as well as shutting down all factories in the states that produce them or block anyway for the weapons to come in from abroad. This willl cause the same thing that happened with the ban of alcohol. Mobs and such will find ways of getting the guns and ways of getting them to the common man. The different mobs will compete against each other for the money. All the same thing as the alcohol prohibition.

Another con is that if the government bans the possession of firearms, then people in this country will feel unsafe. A big part of the right to bear arms is for our protection. Whether it is from someone trying to harm us in the night, or to protect us from the threat of invasion by some military or clandestine force, we feel more secure knowing that we have a way of personally fighting back if the threat to ourselves or our family comes close.

As for pros to the situation, I do not see any at all.

Of course only people with authority should be able to carry guns... It isn't fair if the "criminals" or "insurgents" can shoot back. It would be great to be able to walk into anywhere I want flashing a badge or wearing a uniform knowing full well that no one could do anything about it because if the soon to be condemned had a gun, then all I have to do is blast em! Maybe he/she was just reaching for some kind of identification... Oh well, I'm still alive, guess at the end of the day that's all that really matters huh? (sorry bout the sarcasm, too bad you're on that side of debate, would be hard to argue, good luck) ^.~

I think the day guns should become illegal/unnecessary is the day crime is wiped out. Since that day will never come, then guns should always be legal. It is in the bill of rights that citizens have the right to keep and bear arms. People who think guns should be illegal/controlled don't have their homes broken into at night, their cars stolen, or their children kidnapped so they can't see the true value of protecting themselves. they just want to control others and take away our rights. i think that everyone needs the right to protect themselves. I mean if some rapist was breaking into your house at night and heading for the bedroom of you sleeping 7 year old daughter, what would you do. let him do it, shoot him, or fight him off without a gun and be killed in your own home by his gun? come on, think about it and honestly tell me the truth! you would shoot him! the only con that i can think of is gangs and criminals that have guns and when these guns get into the wrong hangs, there is a problem. Hope this helps with your school debate!

First of all lets set the idea that guns are not dangerous in them selves. The right to keep and bear arms is chiseled in stone in the Constitution.. While I am a responsible gun owner I do believe that stricter laws for the criminal use of guns is necessary. If guns were illegal than only criminals would have guns. Less than 1% of the Legal gun owners in the US have caused death or serious physical injury. I own several guns, all legal. Sen Ted Kennedy's car has caused more death than my guns. Stop the Dealers down south from selling guns to whom ever walks in their door with no ID and no background check. These guns fined there way into the hands of criminals. New York State has a mandatory 1 year sentence for possession of an illegal firearm. Unfortunately, lawyers plead it down and the criminal walks. Control the criminals not the guns.

all you need to do is look at the crime rates at places where they have used absurd gun control. New York City, Washington DC, Chicago, Austrailia.

Bad guys like prey they know aren't possibly armed.

I'm not saying that there shouldn't be regulations and laws but bans and ridiculous gun control measures need to be stopped.

Criminals dont guy and legally buy or posess guns (with a few exceptions), I don't think passing another law is going to stop them either (considering they have probably already violated quite a few already).

Another point is the state and government should try enforcing the laws they have now. It makes no sense to plea bargain with a convicted felon who was in posession of a firearm (mandatory sentence). a case like that is cut and dry, but prosecutors dump the charge down alot to save time. In a case like that a conviction is pretty simple, felon-yes, had a gun -yes , no matter what his excuse is a violation of federal law and carrys a mandatory sentence.

The NRA has taken a stance to fight any legislation that come's into view and I don't agree with that , In Connecticut just to buy a handgun you have to pass a backround check, take a safety course amongst other things and obtain a concealed carry permit. That type of legislation I agreed with and still do. It weeds out a lot of bad apples. They added certain misdemeanors to all felonies as convictions that ban you from obtaining a permit and they will also take your permit and firearms if convicted afterwards.

criminals will always have guns even if it's outlawed.. they buy them off the street or steal them.. Illegal aliens have guns...they don't obey the rules anyway..do u think they would just not get a gun because the govt says not to (they cross the border illegally so they don't care).. I for one would always have a gun.. I live in a neighborhood full of crime... I am not about to live here and not be able to defend myself..In short, the criminals have guns, the illegals have guns and both of those together are a Deadly combination. There are not even that many police. U will never get rids of guns.. like I said people get them illegally and use them ... so thank God we are free to carry a gun..

You should ask some people who live in cities like Philadelphia, where there were over 400 handgun murders last year. People in big cities are exposed to handgun carnage on a daily basis. Most will agree that there are way too many guns on the streets and that guns are all too readily accessible.

For a good documentary of handgun violence in the USA, try renting the movie "Bowling for Columbine."

Ask the woman in the Ft Bragg area! She and her husband lived out away from town, husband in the military and deployed overseas. Wife laying on the couch one evening, oldest child already in bed asleep, wife is pregnant. Wife heard a noise from the front door area, someone trying to break in, she yells she has a gun and knows how to use it. Crook yells back , "So do I!" Crook comes in, fires 4 shots, all miss, wife fires once, hits center of mass.......one less crook, one less court case, one less we have to support in prison. DA says no charges against wife, as it should be!
Turns out husband was very smart, bought a hand gun for wife and taught her how to use it well! If we had no weapons, what should she have done? Called the cops? She'd be dead or raped by the time they got there, call a Lib? have the Lib talk the crook to death.
No, the answer is guns should be allowed to any law abiding American that wants one.

If a person really wants to have a rifle or a shotgun to protect his home or or business or for hunting, I suppose that it should be allowed - In the U.S. we have a tradition for such things. - But I don't see why private citizens should have handguns, except in unusual circumstances with proof of need and a permit. - In almost all places in the U.S. it is already to illegal to carry a loaded handgun in public - certainly not a concealed handgun. - So why have them?

In England, I think the people are safer because there are less guns around. Even the police don't usually carry them.

The purpose of the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution was to make sure that that the people would be able to have "a well regulated militia" - Like the national guard. - It is irrelevant to the gun debate.
