Do they work as well as peppermills with metal mechanisms? Do these pepeprmills break easily? Do they grind coarsely of finely?

Ceramic far outlasts metal in terms of durability. Ceramic also prevents any miniscule metal dust that sometimes occurs with well-worn metal mills from getting on the food. They also don't stain or rust. Ceramic tends to "crush" rather than "grind," as metal does. Ceramic salt mills are also preferable, as they don't fall victim to the salt's eroding properties. Ceramic overall has proved superior in my humble experience; i.e., the Kyocera ceramic-bladed mandoline, which far surpassed any metal-bladed mandoline I've had in the past, and with Kyocera's Kyotop Ceramic serrated blade. The ceramic items can be a little more pricey (depending on what you're buying; not always), but in my experience well worth it. Hope that helps a bit.

They are pretty sturdy. By using ceramic salt and pepper grinders/ mills, you can produce savory flavors in your cooking that do not interfere with the flavor of your peppers and spices. (yes I use a mill for some spices)
