well it may be for hanging, but in that case how come other knives don't have it? besides, isn't it dangerous to hang such a heavy knife up? so there must be some other reason right?

They were traditionally hung from a meat hook, or a hook on the butcher's belt.

Thats because the Chinese cleverly hang their knives than stick it into a block like some others. The cleaver is the only standard chinese cutting instrument. The other knives have other heritages

You have a case of mistaken identity; meat cleavers are big and heavy tools . Chinese cleavers on the other hand are light , thin and very versatile knives.
