My friend has a fat cat that does that and I think it is a habit. She seems to have a ritual going on, same thing every morning. Comes to the door to greet me, I brush her hair, she loves it then gets up, walks to the far side of the room and scoots till she get to me again. Man she sure looks funny doing it too, almost like a smile on her face.

Cats do that with a rectal itch. It can be a sign of worms. Or if the animal ate something, like string. Pick up the tail, make sure nothing is hanging. If there is, take to a vet.

Otherwise, get cat tested for parasites.

Check for allergies also.

If its a female cat, is she fixed? She could be in heat.

One of my cats did that and I realized it was because she couldn't wipe...she's a longhaired cat and some of her #2 was stuck back there. I had to trim her hair to remove it and the butt scooting stopped.

it could either be the glands are impacted which will need to be drained by a vet or it could be worms...if it is the glands and it happens more than once, the vet can teach you how to manually drain them yourself which will save you time and money...my vet taught me....i hope you arent squemish...its not a pretty thing and needless to say...the cats dont like it much....and if its worms that is an easy fix....the vet will give you some medicine.
