You need to visit a tattoo parlour and look at all of the designs they have. Also, in order to not regret it, you need to get something that you like and that represents you and who you are. Take your time, coz a tattoo lasts an awful long time. Try creating your own designs, or speak to the artist and work with them and have them create a design for you with your input.

Great question! So many times people just get a tat on a crazy whim and regret it. I'm incredibly ficklet so I have a self-imposed rule of a year long wait period before I get any new work. I have to pick a tattoo, place for it, and size a year in advance. If I change my mind about any part of it, the year starts over. I waited almost two years for my first tat and haven't regretted it since and it has been three years. I'm at a little over one year for wanting my next tattoo, but am waiting to find a good enough artist since it'll be a large back piece.

No matter what, don't rush into a decision. It will be on your body for a looong time and you don't want a daily reminder of your haste.

All of my tattoos I am getting have meaning to me and are personal and not something that I just went out on a whim, make sure it is something you think about and that when you're 50,60,70 etc.. you can still look at and it can be just as special as why you got it. Only you can really know what is right for you just remember it stays with you forever and laser removal hurts and costs a lot more than the tattoo itself. Try asking yourself what do I want? Is it a drawing a loved ones name who has passed on, a pet, etc.. or something that has given you strength or anything. Then ask will I be happy with this forever? Just think about it long and hard or if youve had something in mind for years then go for it, however I strongly suggest never getting a significant others name I know more than a few who have and they only ended up regretting it one however at the end got a void stamp type tatt over it. Good luck with it

Take time to think about what you want first. Then after you have an idea of that decide where on your body is a suitable place for it. Keep in mind that as you get older your body changes some and tattoos can distort. Once you have figured all that out do some research on the local tattoo shops to see where you want to get it done. Remember different artists have different styles. The most important thing to keep in mind is tat this is not a quick process. I have two tattoos and each one took two to three years of thought and planning before I got it.

Choosing a tattoo should not be an easy decision. A tattoo is a permanent mark so getting one requires commitment. I don't care if they say it can be erased because in the subdermal level, the tat is still there.

Go for a design you really, really like and can see yourself flaunting even when you are old and gray.

If you are going to keep your tat hidden all the time, I don't see why you have to get a tattoo at all.

If you are not sure of a design yet, I recommend using those temporary tattoos in the meantime until you settle on a design you really like.

For starters, DON"T get the names of whoever you are currently dating tattooed on you, no matter much you are in love with this person. I've met too many people who deeply regretted that. Get the names of only your kids and that's all the names you need. As for others, get whatever is meaningful to you. Keep it small and not too obvious, wherer you can hide it with some clothings. If you're Irish, get a cletlic symbol. Meaningful, as in connected to you in many ways. If you're Middle easern, an islamic writing or what ever is meaningful to you. Have fun!

you need to sit and think about what is significant to you and what has meaning to you. you need to remember that you are going to have this for the rest of your life - so you might not want to choose some flash off the wall because it has no significance or meaning to you.

I also disagree with people that are saying that if you get a tattoo it has to be showing or else you shouldn't get it. The tattoo is for you and no one else and it's your decision as to whether to put it in a visible location or not.

I took a whole year to design mine and make a final decision as to what I was going to get and which artist to use.

also...it's which, not witch.

think about it for a long time, make sure it's not something u could change ur mind on, like a girlfriend's name or a sports team, or a band, make it very intimate and don't get one off the wall 'flash art' u will be disapointed when u find 8 other people have the exact same tattoo as u. draw it ur self or have some one u know draw it so that in itself will put meaning behind it.

Your best bet is to design something yourself, or go to a tatoo artist and talk to them about what you like and have them design something. If it means something, then it is less likely that you will later regret your choice. When you go to a shop that has the pics hanging on the wall and you just order what you see, then it is less personal. Even if your personality changes later in life, an original tatoo still tells the story of who you were when you got it. However, the one ordered off the wall just shows what you thought was cool that day. My sister has kept every tatoo that she designed, but has had the 3 "generic" tatoos removed.

Put A LOT of thought into it. Also ask yourself why you want a tattoo. If you see something you like and think it's cool, it's possible you won't think it's cool later. Usually, the meaningful ones are the ones I assume most people won't regret--like a picture or name or symbol of their kids or someone close to them who passed away.
