The doctor prescribed naproxen for the pain I've been experiencing with my ankle because the advil wasn't helping and tearing my stomach up. The leaflet states that one of the signs of a serious reaction is joint pain. When I asked a nurse today she treated me like I was an idiot. I know it's not going to take the pain away quickly but thing is that it varies throughout the day (largely dependent on my activity level) and I just want to make sure it's nothing to worry about. I know if I start breaking out in hives/rash, trouble breathing, etc. that needs to be addressed but what about joint pain? Was that just a misprint?

my ankle has been messed up for as long as I can remember. not entirely sure what i did this time and I'm using crutches to get around (for the most part). my stomach is still bothering me and the pain is getting worse (as it normally does at night) just wanted to make sure it wasn't a big deal. between my head, stomach and ankle i just want it all to end.

no, it wasn't a misprint... but i worry about the activity...why are you having joint pain in your ankle...did you injure it? why are you not off you ankle to help speed recovery?
naproxen is in the same class of drugs as advil (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) so it may tear up your stomach as well
take with food
good luck

My guess is that if you were experiencing joint pain as a side effect of the naproxen, you would feel the joint pain in many joints, not just the ankle. You could try letting it wear off for a while and see how your ankle feels without the medication and with it. It's not a stupid question; I'm sorry the nurse you asked didn't understand. You might want to call the doctor who prescribed the medicine -- at the very least it sounds like maybe the naproxen isn't working very well in which case you might get another prescription.

I'm not sure if it is a misprint. There are many rare side effects and strange manifestations of severe side effects. Those information sheets are wriiten by lawyers as much as doctors. I can't find joint pain as a side effect on a quick web search. Don't worry about every minor thing on the list, but if something seems wrong without your finding it on a list, then talk to your doctor.

I take naproxen, it is an anti inflamatory, it helps with pain and swelling. If you are only getting the joint pain in your ankle don't worry about it. You didn't say what is wrong with your ankle, but if it is a sprain, you should rest it. Try to stay off of it until it heals.

There are no stupid questions, don't be so hard on yourself. The nurse was clearly not having a good day. You are right to be concerned with the side effects of all meds. It's so odd to me that some of the side effects are more serious than the ailments they were meant to treat. Many hospitals have help lines or info numbers where you can ask medical questions. Don't ever stop asking questions, who else is going to look out for you?

is it just your ankle that is hurting or are other joints in your body experiencing pain as well? areas like the knees, ankles, and fingers (when you bend them).
if it's just your ankle that is hurting then it's not the medication-it's due to your injury or condition.
decrease your activity level if you hurt when active, and follow any other instructions that your dr gave you.
if the other joints in your body start to ache or have pain-then stop the medication and see your dr again

I think it must read it's FOR joint pain. I've been prescribed naproxen many times and each time it was FOR joint pain. It relieves inflammation in the joints therefore relieving the pain. Hope that helps.

Naproxen is a good medication, but it's an anti-inflammatory and does take a few days to really start working.
