An excellent question.

I think you are right that the bible is not at any point self-referential and no book states that it is the authority.

P.S. John 1 is about the word made flesh - that is to say Jesus - not the word written down. Matthew 7 is about the teachings of Jesus.

The well made point is that while various church councils may have said the bible was the sole authority, no book in the bible makes this claim even so far as making it for the book itself.

Jesus said, "Scripture cannot be broken" (John 10:35). He said "I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished" (Matthew 5:18). He said, "It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the law" (Luke 16:17).
Jesus used Scripture as the final court of appeal in every matter under dispute. He said to some Pharisees, "You nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down" (Mark 7:13). To the Sadducee's He said, "You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God". (Mat 22:29). To the devil, Jesus consistently responded, "It is written..." (Mat 4:4-10). So following Jesus' lead, the Scriptures alone are our supreme and final authority.

The Bible claims to be the inspired word of God Himself, and there are several proofs for the validity of this claim. But the Bible is not just a book about "matters of faith." It's history, poetry, prophecy, and more. It tells you how to live your life to prepare for the next.

Amos 7:7 Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the LORD stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand.

Hebrews 3:7 Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,

1 Peter 1:22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:
23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

Psalm 12:6 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. 7 Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.

The Bible isn't in The Bible. It is a compilation of letters and collections (Psalms). Still, the overall message of the Bible is one message because it was inspired by God, and is God's word. God inspired it, and I'm sure that He wouldn't have left something out of it.

It doesn't.

And all the Bible verses in the world can't change it.

Jesus founded a church, and he gave authority to it ... not the Bible.

Anyone who claims the Bible has authority superior to that of the church is simply either mistaken, or a heretic ... and very likely Protestant.

Maybe if you're Protestant. For Catholics and Orthodox, there is also Tradition, not just the Bible

It is god himshelf speaking! Why wouldn't I use as sole authority of faith? When god talks you listen.
