My father is Caribbean and I have a lot of West Indian friends and WE pronounce it KER-E-BEAN. You do NOT the "rib" or even stress it like how Americans like to pronounce it. I was just wondering if people actually know how to pronounce it or say it the way that it is SUPPOSED to be pronounced.

The thing is, every country says the names of other countries in the way that best suits them. Further, the U.S. has so many dialects that I know about 3 different ways that Caribbean is pronounced here. Same goes for any country...we don't say "Mexico" the way Mexicans say it either...and Mexicans don't even call us the United States at all...they call us Estados Unidos...

Just some stuff to think about...

Care-ih-bee-in or kuh-rib-ee-in, but then I am an American so I speak English that is correct, but depending on where Americans are from, it is pronounced differently. People think Ohio (where I live) is southern or rural or backwards, but when you live in Alabama or Kentucky, Ohio is Northern all the way, and this girl I work with is from Kentucky, but lived in Tennessee, and she still says stuff like you Yankee northerners and she sounds totally different from someone from Ohio, but then someone who lives in Toledo or Cleveland (northern Ohio) and someone who lives in southern or southeastern Ohio sounds totally different. So it is all just a matter of where you live.

I pronounce it Ca-ri-be-in. (I know that it is not spelled right, but I am writing it the way I say it.) I looked it up on dictionary.com and they say it is Car·ib·be·an. I think that there is no right way to say it. It is more of a personal preference.
