Whether or not the breeder has begun housetraining...YOU should start when you bring the puppy home. Expect accidents (sometimes lots of them) but choose the spot in the yard that you would like your puppy to use and take them to that spot regularly. Even if your breeder has begun training, you're basically starting over with a new environment and a new "bathroom".

The breeder I got my puppy from hadn't done any housetraining and my pup was going to the door within 3 days of being in my home (at about 5 weeks). I have an older dog that I rescued when she was approximately 18 months old...she took about 6 months to get the idea of going outside to potty. The length of time it will take will vary with any puppy and with different breeds, but be consistent and patient from the very beginning of your life with your dog and they'll get the idea.

Most people take home puppies around the age of 8 weeks and, given that, it's really never too early to start housetraining. One of the best ways to get started is to pick up your puppy if you notice him starting to go the bathroom and carry him outside where you want him to go. Be sure to reward him well, and he'll no doubt begin to learn simply by association. Just keep in mind that housetraining can take a great deal of patience and understanding.

Dog Potty Training
Training your dog not to use the house, as a potty is the difficult part in the dog training. Potty training should be started immediately to your puppy before it crosses 3 months. You should know that puppy don't have control on their bladder until it reaches 3 months of age. It is better enough to start the dog-potty training during your puppy's 2 months age also. During the dog potty training of your new puppy during its first couple of months, take your pup outside for every 2 or 3 hours or so. If your pup gets accustomed to this, it will get dog potty training at this early age itself. Moreover, dog potty training at older age will be very easy for the pups those who have been trained early dog potty training.

If your dog goes potty in your home, don't yell at him or rub its nose. When you note him doing this type of potty, say in a deep voice again, "No, baaaaad dog" and immediately rush him outside and give him a command too pee. This clearly give an impression to your dog that you don't like it , so it will with hold its natures call until you take him out.

I disagree with the answer of when it comes home. I breed miniature pinschers, and I start housetraining at 3 weeks of age. The pups are puppy pad trained when they go to their new home at 8 weeks of age. Housetraining should be started while with the breeder, if its not been started ask yourself if you are dealing with the right breeder. Its as basic as weening. You dont buy a pup that hasnt been weened, so dont buy one that hasnt at least STARTED its potty training.

Pups that are 6-8 weeks old are not capable of whining at the door, I suggest starting with puppy pad and slowly moving the pup outside to relieve himself. Crate training is the best way to potty train, and used with puppy pads, you'll have your puppy trained in no time!!

As soon as you bring the dog through your front door! Or should I say onto your property!
The sooner you begin training, the better it will be for all of you.
Have patience and don't give up!

Well, i started my puppy at 6 weeks since that's when i got her. The breeder already had them paper trained at 4 weeks. Anyage is ok, you just have to be persistant.

the sooner the dog equates outside to where he's supposed to go, the better, you see it getting ready to go, run it either outside or if you have an approved potty site inside... but i'd still go outside unless it's really cold, and i'm in florida, so it doesn't count here. if your pup can walk, he can start going outside.

I agree with crate training, for example, crate your dog at bedtime or when you go out. If it is a small dog, "pee pads" are a great help.
