Dogs have more than 10 times the smell receptors we do. The effect of this is squared though, making their sense of smell about 100 times stronger. It varies greatly across breed, of course.

They can smell the dinosaurs that used to live in your area.
Seriously, this story will amaze you.
In a town near me, a young woman stole another woman's baby. The mom called the police and the police called a bloodhound and her handler. They let the dog smell the baby blanket, and the bloodhound started down the street, so they put her in the car. They stopped at each corner for the bloodhound to show them which way to go. They got on the freeway and stopped at each exit for the dog to show them whether the baby got off or kept on the freeway. Finally they got off the freeway in another town and stopped at each corner for the bloodhound to show them which way the baby went. Finally the dog went up to the front door of a house. They knocked and there was the kidnapper with the baby. She was showing it to her ex-boyfriend and saying that it was hers and his.
Bloodhounds have the best sense of smell of any dog; they can smell the scent in the air, so that is why she could smell where the baby went even though it never touched the ground.

A dog's sense of smell is, indeed, very great. In fact, their sense of smell is about 50 to 100 times more powerful than a human's. Puppies are born with their eyes closed and greatly rely on their sense of smell to survive. Many dogs, particularly as they get older, have poor eyesight and rely on smell, as well as hearing, to get around. Some breeds of dogs, especially hounds, have a greater sense of smell than other breeds. Most owners of hound dogs know the power of scent when it comes to their dog as it's difficult, once they've focused on a scent, to distract them.

Dogs have a great sense of smell. They can discern anything and anyone by just smelling.
My dogs go out of their way to meet & welcome me when I'm still about 200 meters from our house.

Extraordinary.
Where humans can smell a few parts per million, dogs can pick up scents at a few parts per BILLION!
