One theory is:" it all goes back to the time before dogs became so integrated into human life. When dogs live in the wild they have to hunt for the food which they eat and from which they feed their young. It is one thing for a dog or group of dogs to hunt and kill an animal for food but what if the animal is too large to eat in one sitting. Or what if you want to take food back to the den so you can eat it later. Well if you were to leave food out in the wild for any length of time you would discover what I mean. There are innumerable scavengers just waiting for someone to drop or leave unattended some tasty morsel. So the dogs learned to hide their food. This instinct has been passed down from generation to generation."http://www.seefido.com/html/why_do_dogs_bury_dones_.htm
Another possible explanation is:" domestic dogs are thought to have descended from wild wolves that were tamed many years ago. In the wild, wolves often bury their leftovers and return to them when they get hungry." (http://www.discoverymagazine.com/digger/d96dd/d9601dd.html)
The experts at the National Geographic Society suggest:" Many pet dogs also bury bones or favorite toys for future use, just as their wild relatives sometimes bury a kill to secure the meat for later feasts."

Some dogs do bury bones and even toys. They often do this in a yard, but you can also observe some dogs doing this inside, burying their prized possessions beneath a blanket. This is an instinctive behavior for dogs that harkens back to their wild ancestors. Wolves and fox bury food to preserve it, particularly if they have killed a large animal or more than one. Later, the food will be unearthed and eaten.

When they lived in the wild they had to bury it or some other wild thing would eat it. I think it is because they think it is a game. I had a dog that always bury his bones when I told him to get me a bone he would go out in the yard and dig one up and give it to me.He was a good old dog I lost him last summer. He was 12 years old.

It's not TOO often that you see it, but some dogs just love to bury bones. My dog, for example LOVES to dig, and sometimes he tries to bury his bones.
My other dog just buries his bones and such between couch cushions, in piles of blankets, etc.
You'll just sit down somewhere and realize you're sitting on a bone.
Lol, in conclusion--it's not an old wives' tale, but it sure can seem like one sometimes :-)

They do bury them . It is just a natual thing with dogs. Mine love to bury his in my sofa. or under the bed covers. They hide them so they have access to them when they have the urge to chew them. If they are out door dogs they will bury them all over the yard. It is not just a wives tale.

This is no wives tale!! When I was younger we had a dog that would do this..... and if we did not let her in the yard she would bury them in the house plants sometimes even in our couch cushions!! I believe she was doing this for safe keeping.....she seemed to always know where she hid them even when it was months later...

you are able to desire to no longer be a canine proprietor. Why I lived in a three tale Apt. whilst my Yorkie replaced into 8 months previous. He could take his bone, walk to the nook of the room, set it down, start up "digging" %. up the bone, placed it interior the "hollow" take his head and form of head-butt the dirt over the "hollow" and walk away. Now it relatively is a city canine!!! Too humorous! we've a backyard the place he does an identical-purely interior the dirt!

They do but never ever ever give a dog a real bone.Rawhide chewies are best. ;O) Bones can cause all sorts of internal injuries that lead to death such as splintering & puncturing the digestive track or colon or trake etc.
