Use good meat such as "Kobe Beef" As for the ingredients... that's up to your personal taste. I personally just salt and pepper the beef and then focus on my toppings, preferring garlic, Gorgonzola, mayonnaise on the slightly toasted bun, and a hint of scotch bonet peppers.

I consider the All American Hamburger to be made as follows:
The meat should be lean ground sirloin mixed with salt and pepper. Put about 1/2 tsp. liquid smoke in 1 lb. of meat. Form the patties (be generous here), and grill on a charcoal grill until the center is light pink and hot (no blood running, but moist).
Use the large buns, smear dijon mustard on each, place the meat on the bun, lay on American cheese, cheddar cheese, or pepperjack cheese (or all three). Next put a slice of onion, several dill pickle slices, sliced tomatoes, crisp lettuce, and (if desired jalapeno slices). Adding several pieces of crisp bacon is good too.

first off, dont use extra lean, use lean ground beef, its much tastier and has a better consistency.
a really awesome burger recipe: 2 lb. lean ground beef
1tbsp. prepared mustard
1tbsp. onion powder (not onion salt)
1 tbsp garlic powder (not garlic salt)
2 tbsp ranch dressing
1tsp sage powder
1tsp thyme powder
1 tbsp worcestershire sauce
1 tsp hickory smoke flavor
combine everything together and hand-knead until well mixed.
bbq til desired doneness.
makes 6 large or 8 medium or 10 small patties.
i serve mine on a toasted kaiser bun topped with raw onion slices, melted sharp cheddar, and a dressing made of a mixture of equal parts: mayo, relish, ketchup, mustard, creamy caesar salad dressing.

Use beef mince, best to buy the cuts of meat yourself and then mince it.
I like to add sauteed onion, breadcrumbs, tsp of mustard and my secret a splash of lee & Perrins, salt and a beaten egg to the mixture.
Serve in a sesame bun slightly toasted and add the following:-
Salad
Cheese slice
Sliced gerkins
ketchup
Tartar sauce.
All served with a side bowl of thin chips(french fries).

GROUND CHUCK, seasoned salt, garlic powder, and black pepper. I top my burger with American cheese, grilled onions, hickory smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato, and yellow mustard. For the ultimate burger, you MUST use a good quality, FRESH bun! I like mine on a bakery onion roll/bun.
I like my burger grilled on a CHARCOAL grill, or in a HOT cast iron skillet. Of course, I like my burger well done!

There are many ways to put a burger together, but here's a tip about the patties.
Make them ahead of time and put them in the refrigerator for a couple of hours. This keeps them from crumbling, or trying to fall apart when you cook them.
The same goes for when you make a meatloaf...make it ahead of time, and chill it for 3-4 hours before cooking.
This way it holds its shape after you take it out of the oven.
