No, and no. Well, sort of--
You can heat up food if the flame was already going before Shabbat. After the holiday starts, you ARE NOT to light a flame. This includes turning on lightbulbs and tv remotes and things. You have to turn all your lights on before Shabbat and keep them on through the holiday since you are not allowed to turn them off either. (No making fire and no extinguishing fire on Shabbat)
You can pet your dogs but be careful to not pull any of its hairs out (i.e. try not to brush it on Shabbos because that would violate a melacha) You also cannot make your dogs run and pull something because then you are making them as if they were working for you. You cannot employ people to do your work for you on Shabbat, either, and this applies to dogs and any other animal in your care.
For more information on Shabbat, you can go to http://www.jewfaq.org/shabbat.htm or message me and I will be happy to answer any more questions.
whynotask(...)'s information is a bit off.

It depends on who's authority your looking for. On one hand there is the traditions of the Pharisees that still live today, or the simple rules that God put down.
Under God's rules - you can't cook (your supposed to be resting) but you can pet your dog, even brush it. Why? Its not your job. People usually pet their dog or cat or whatever for the plesure of it, so then its not work. And making your dogs run - do you mean by playing fetch with a ball? Of course not - that is playing. Even a dog knows the fun of fetch isn't work (even though some humans have that problem) But to pull something? Depends on what is being pulled. If a dog is pulling ropes to draw water from a well or some form of labor, no, even a dog deserves a rest on the Sabbath. But if your having a tug-of-war with your dog by pulling on a rope, that's not labor, that's fun.

Jewish People keep the Shabbot or Sabbath.
NO WORK AT ALL.
Go to Synagogue but not walk over 500paces(?).
No light matches, or turn switches, not even tear toilet paper or flush.
PRAY and Worship , and eat pre prepared foods.
Can NOT turn a tap for water, must be already in glasses.
TRUE CHRISTIANS do NOT keep Shabbot.

You can do whatever you like.
Only the rules set up by others, which you chose to follow can limit you.
