there is Scientologie, published in 1934 by a German named Dr. Anastasius Nordenholz in pre War Germany. It includes a gradation chart and allusions to states of awareness, very like what Hubbard uses.
Dianetics is nothing more than a corrupted form of Psychiatric therapy called Aberactive Therapy, which was extensively used to treat WWII soldiers suffering from "shell shock" or Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. The author was Professor William Sargant who just happened to have visiting Professorship In Chapel Hill North Carolina in 1945, which was a 4 hour drive from Norfolk Naval base, where Hubbard also just happened to be in 1945.
Although Hubbard's name is on the patent application, the E-meter was actually invented by a chiropractor named Volney Mathison, and was originally called the Mathison Model B Electropsychometer.
Hubbard's Scientology "cross" has also been inspired by existing sources (obviously).

Yes, Scientology is truly. It has have an impact on in society it's spoken approximately by way of billions of men and women. It has 1000's of corporations and companies around the planet. Good Control : Harmonious alignment. Bad Control : Disharmonious alignment. LRH from a Technical Bulletin. L.Ron Hubbard, good, he was once L. Ron Hubbard. He did plenty of study, traveled, discovered existence, requested questions, spoke back many questions, wrote books, began countless corporations and events, explored, mapped each bodily and Spiritually. And absolutely so much, so much, extra. No, he in no way disassociated himself from Scientology, even though he did get different men and women to run it organisationally. He had extra study to do to conclude the 'Bridge to Total Freedom'. The fundamental premise of Scientology is Total Freedom as a Spiritual Being. As a Scientologist 'I feel' there was once a person on the planet that was once way more Spiritual than many. He could have been known as Jesus or Isa or another neighborhood title. I am definite that he was once a Spiritual Being with a better and extra intimate know-how of God than such a lot. His frame was once from earth and he the Being, I can simplest expect from a Spiritual Realm. As some distance as Son of God, I do not know. It is absolutely viable, I have now not visible it disproved. Thank you for the query. Good success sifting via the fake expertise.

A decade before he began down the serious path of religious icon, L. Ron Hubbard openly told people that he thought he get anyone to believe anything. That comment was made in response to a question about a science fiction novel he was writing.
The thought process goes that he could get anyone to believe anything and therefore he got people to believe that the God/gods were actually space aliens thousands of years ago.

the neologism "scientology" (scientologie) has, apparently, been used twice before him by two other people: A. Upward in 1907 and some other crackpot, A. Nordenholz, in 1934.
