It depends on how much you can spend, and how far you want to travel.
In the northeast, I would recommend Maine, and Acadia National Park.
South... try going to Natchez, Mississippi.... oldest town on the Mississippi River, with some incredible old bed and breakfast hotels... great for just sleeping in and being, well, on a honeymoon. Amazing antebellum homes which you can tour. Nice bluffs overlooking the river.
In the midwest, you could head to Minneapolis and stay at the 601 Graves hotel. Go with your spouse to various museums, shop downtown or at the Mall of America, hit the great nightlife of Minneapolis. Or, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, is a good place as well.
Out west... take a honeymoon in a mountain town- like Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Or you could head to the Grand Canyon, which is nice...spend a couple days hiking, and the nights in a hot tub, etc. There is always Las Vegas, but, I don't think that's romantic.
Just a few suggestions...

Mendocino, CA...2 hours north of San Francisco, A little town on the Mendocino Headlands by the north coast of the Pacific. Nearby giant redwoods, gorgeous botanical gardens, horseback riding to forest or beach, and train rides through the forest. The area is spotted with Bed & Breakfast Inns and the town is very much like a New England fishing village. It has great food, shops, spas, and easy access to the headlands. Go in the summer.

Bar Harbor, Maine. It beautiful, romantic and there's plenty to do. The sun first touches the United States on top of Mount Katadin. Great place to watch the sun rise and set. I can't say enough about Bar Harbor.

If you want an off the beaten path type of place, I suggest Door County Wisconsin in the summer. It has been called the Cape Cod of the midwest. Lots of little harbor villages with local artists of all kinds, folk music, camping, hiking, nice beach walks and beautifully restored lighthouses.

Caesar's resorts in the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania. Visit their website at www.caesarspoconoresorts.com. My wife and I have stayed at Paradise Stream and Cove Haven - the totally most romantic places in the USA.
