It's very refreshing here in BC. I quickly got use to it (5 years now or more?) When traveling I hate bars, restaurants, casinos or whatever that have smoking rules from back in the dark ages. Guess what? I now take it into consideration when going places. Yeah, a trip back to Calgary sounds like fun. I admit, I just got home from Vegas, but HATED the smoke. One question? Why not ALL bars?

Here in BC it is the rights of employees to a smoke free environment. Given that not all employees can just choose where to work given they have to make a living.

It works in WA state well somewhat but for the most part it's a lot better. The air is cleaner and more breathable. It's 20 feet away from all entrances to bussinesses and it includes bars. none of the bars or smoking restraunts really lost any bussiness because all their smoking patrons really had no where else to go to smoke other than 20 feet away from the door in the cold or be at home. It works and the air is cleaner...

Vancouver B.C. is the same way -- in fact I think all of BC is, but not sure. All of Washington state is as well.

While I am a non-smoker, (and never have been a smoker) I agree that smokers should have a place. A lot of cafe's, restaurants, bars and coffee shops in Vancouver have covered, sometimes enclosed, patios for smokers to sit, and now I hear there are people calling for non-smoking there as well ... I disagree totally!!

I have just recently (6 weeks) ago given up smoking after about 20 years and I would like to see smokers dealt with respect and not as outcasts - there has to be a happy medium.

I think it is great. I don't think we are discriminating against smokers, just cancer causing smoke that is impossible to avoid if a non smoker wants to walk into a building. I say to smokers...please spend a day in a cancer clinic and watch patients and their families including children deal with cancer. Go and see 40 year old mom who is 80 pounds trying to get better with her 7 year old daughter next to her. If some people can quit so can everyone else.

good
Saskatoon went smoke free awhile ago and people complained and said the bars would fail and they wouldnt go anymore and..... they all went back. people got used to having to go outside and i think even smokers are happy to be able to go out and still breath. for a few weeks or months business maybe slower but they will come back. and then EVERYONE can enjoy themselves. alot of times i hear smokers say that people choose to go to a bar or restaurant so they should not complain but really, they choose to smoke right? no one chooses to breath... we all have to so why make it difficult for other people?
good job for Calgary if they do go that way!

Edmonton has been doing it for awhile now, and its been fine. Sure some places are losing out on business, but it just means that no one has to die innocently anymore from second hand smoke that they acquired from the job or workplace.

The cigarette nazis have just started. They are trying to get smoking in cars with kids outlawed. On their agenda is to outlaw smoking in apartments or buildings that are connected with other dwellings. Hold on.
