I often take pictures in quiet situations. I've scoured the net and manual for more info with no luck.

If I wanted a point-and-shoot, I'd have bought one, thanks.

No, you can't make that camera silent. It's an SLR so it has a proper shutter that opens and closes just like a film camera and that's the clacking sound. It's not an electronically made sound, it's mechanical. If you want something that doesn't make much noise then you'll probably need a simple 'point and shoot' camera.

Dude people are just trying to help. There is no way to get rid of the Klack sound. Because an SLR has a mirror that swings up to expose the sensor to light. Unlike P&S cameras, where the sensor is always expose to light, the SLR has to make a noise inorder to swing the mirror up and take a picture

Koko is correct: the sound is not so much the shutter as it is mirror slap. And there are no settings to tweak - that's just the way it is. If you need your D50 to be nearly silent, get a 'blimp' for it.
I'd recommend the Nikon CS-13 but it seems to have been discontinued: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=37267&is=REG
Perhaps you can find one on eBay (or search the intarweb for a current model).

The Nikon D50 will make that sound no matter what you. If you upgrade to the D80 or D200 its not as loud but your going to have sound.

Most cameras have a setting to allow you to reduce the volume of the shutter sounds or mute the whole thing all together. Even my low end Canon allows me to set the volume for individual events like shutter click or timed shot. Check the system settings for your camera.
