I have one of those huge Monstad mirror from IKEA that is like 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs 66 lbs. I want to hang it vertically over my fireplace into a surface that's drywall. I'm pretty sure I will be able to find wood underneath the drywall for better stability but I was wondering what type of hooks/fasteners should be used to best secure this very large (and expensive) mirror so it will be evenly balanced, secure and so it will not fall and break? Thanks.

On new drywall, w/ good quality paint u could use adhesive. Products tell u thier holding per sqr in. or foot. If ur unsur, find at lest 2 studs in the wall and use slotted mirrior brackets and screws. Home improvement centers have the, and for large mirriors. If it's in a frame, then it should have a wire. It's always best to find the studs and use screws, but then ur putting 60 lbs on two screws and a small area. Adhesive, even liquid nails applied in lines every two inces apart the lentgh of the back will hold the mirrior and a construction guy from his hat. Multiple layers of paint, or an older surface is a danger for this, but you should be able to tell by giving it a good look if adhesive will hold. If u hang it over the fireplace, which is a tender Norm Rockwell notion, u'll be able to see people behind u, or ur ownself walking through the room. Why not stick it on the ceiling in the master bedroom?*

I've got a big, heavy mirror also...It has a wire stretched across the back, so I used 16 penny nails(3 actually) in order to both use evenly spaced studs, and have it hang evenly. Two nails would easily hold the weight if your're able to get it balanced and level on studs....

Doing it as cheap as possible.....

Find a stud by tapping on the wall while listening to when the sound stops sounding hollow. Find the middle of the area of where that "dead sounding" area is and try putting a screw into the wall....not all the way...if its sturdy, then you hit the stud...hang mirror from one or more of these....If its a wire then use two and it will be easy to balance even if your screws arent at the same height...

You cannot expect drywall to hold a mirror of that proportion. Instead get a stud finder, anchor your hangers in the studs and safely hang your mirror. Good Luck

Ram-set do a great line in dry wall fasteners, but id prefer to fix it to the studs.. it's a stronger hold.. If you can find the studs and drill the holes in the mirror(professional) to match... better again!!

Get those "Hercules nails" that the guy from "Oxyclean"-Billy sells
They hold 150 pds and leaves a tack mark in the wall instead of a huge hole....
