How Long Will Your Dog Live?
"Small dogs often live to 14 or 15 years of age."
Typical lifespan of small dogs :
( I wondered why too)
*Smaller dogs generally live longer than larger dogs, mostly because they don't suffer as many serious skeletal and cardiovascular diseases as larger dogs.
*Their bones and joints don't need to support as much weight, so they don't break down as quickly.
*Their heart doesn't need to pump blood through a huge body, so it doesn't wear out as quickly.
*They have proportionately fewer growth hormones surging through their metabolic system. Studies suggest that growth hormones may shorten life.
My Jack Russel terrier is 11 now and I'm hoping to see her agile and happy at 15+ with good age approprate food, regular vet checks and lots of love and exorcise.

Little dogs usually live longer than big dogs. I think they can live up to 14 years, maybe even reaching 17 years depending on the dog. My black lab is 14 years old, which is pretty old for a large dog.

rat terriers, if they are spayed or neutered, had proper vet care, and fed premuim dog food and exercised regularly, can live up to 14-17 years. this is hoping nothing medically happens to them that you can't prevent. so really your dog has just hit middle age, you could have many happy years together still!

A vet once told me the best loved dogs live longest. Could be another 10 years if all goes well!
