There's no way to answer this question. If he just smelled a female dog in heat, he might have gone to mate with her and then come right back afterwards. But if he constantly tries to get away from home like you say, he may never come back. It's easy for a dog to get distracted once they're away, with the exception of some dogs who have a very strong bond to their owner. But if the bond wasn't there or if he's the independent type, he could be gone for good.
You probably realize this now, so I'm not criticizing you, but it sure shows the benefit of getting your dog spayed/neutered. If you get him back, or if you get a new dog, I trust that you'll get this done right away. If you neuter at an early enough age, he may never mark territory, hump, or roam.
I hope you get him back!

At 2 yrs old he is in his prime for mating! You should have netured him!!! And he very well could end up dead crossing roads dog fights etc..He strays roams to mate If he got some he may want more or he will be home after female is out of heat up to 7 days. Now I've named 2 irresponsible pet owners Nuter& Spay!!!!!!!Wherever he is and damage he does you are liable for.If he left hungry he will be tearing apart someones trash. Not all people love dogs so don't exclude some annoyed idiot shooting him!!

how about a bit of responsible pet ownership?
neuter your dog and have an escape proof yard. It is dangerous for dogs to be wondering the street for a number of reasons. He could be hit by a car, he could be picked up to be used as a fighter or bait for fighting dogs, he could get mistreated by someone cruel who sees him. Hopefully he will just be picked up by animal control or some nice person.
Maybe this should teach you a lesson.

sometimes longer, sometimes they never come back. I'd keep checking the local shelters and put up missing flyers in case a person has picked him up and doesn't know where to take him. My boyfriends aunt picked up a stray from the side of the road with no tags and still has him.

Why are you on the computer? I called the police when my 19 year old dog left home. Make up pictures, with phone number and put them up on poles around. Go around looking for your dog . Call up the shelters.

If you are unable to manage your dog, then get him NEUTERED!!!
Roaming dogs are the reason we have so many unwanted puppies born, and also the reason we have so many dog attacks!
YOU are the problem the rest of us are having to pay for!

My doberman would stray for about a week sometimes when we lived in the middle of nowhere. Likely he will show up or be found again by someone. Ads in the paper and all that jazz...
