When I was having a problem with depression there was a state funded Community Counseling Center in the area. Patients paid based on their ability to pay. You might look in your yellow pages for counseling and see, if you can find anything similar.

If your depression is bad and chronic (meaning you have a history of hospitalization) your state may require county social services to help you. You can try NAMI too, the national association for the mentally ill, (google them) and call up their local chapter for info. In Minnesota here, the crisis line (a suicide hotline) has info on resources in the community. Prozac is cheap and generic right now, so a family doc could give you that. There is also St John's wort, if you think meds are what you need. There may be free support groups- NAMI may know about that. It really depends how bad off you are-if you have very severe depression, the government will help you out, but if you're still mostly functional, you're kinda on your own to pay what you can at a counseling center (sliding scale fees) or work out a deal with a doctor. ***YOU WOULD DO WELL TO DO ONLINE RESEARCH to find out what things you can do for yourself for free, like exercise 1/2 hour every day, go out and get as much winter sun as you can, learn relaxation (check out a CD at the library?) Hope this helped.

I am a pharmacist, and there are patient assistance programs offered by the various manufacturers of anti-depressive medications (i.e.- prozac, zoloft, celexa, paxil, lexapro, etc., etc.)
Of course you need to be under a physician's care with a valid prescription...and if you are...go to www.needymeds.com and there are alphabetical listings of the above mentioned medications (and others) and the patient assistance programs associated with them, some of which can supply you with the medication at little to no cost. The website gives toll free numbers and addresses to contact the appropriate manufacturer.

Yes, absolutely. Call your local health and human resoarces department and ask them. One of our local places is called Blue Valley Mental Health and they are wonderful. They help you and work with you in any way they can to help. I do not have insurance either, however, my doctor helped me fill out a very simple paper for a prescription assistance program to help me get the medication I need. I was able to get the best on the market and thank God I don't have to pay the cost of it. It depends on your income on how much of it you have to pay for. Good luck and youre doing a good thing by not ignoring it. That's easy to do sometimes when faced with outragous costs of medical care.

In most US counties, there is a ____ County Mental Health Department (or clinic). You should be able to find it in your local phone book. They work on a sliding scale, based on your income. Around here, if your income is very low and you have no insurance, your co-pay can be as little as $1 for every appointment. They have therapists and psychiatrists on staff, so you can get counseling and have meds prescribed if necessary. There are prescription assistance programs to help people with low incomes to get their meds, another one of them is https://www.pparx.org/Intro.php . Good luck!

Free clinics are in almost every city. If the depression is severe, any emergency room is obligated to assist you.

Check with your local churches. Some pastors are also counselors (couples or individual) or can point you to helpful resources.
