yes, it's rude to ask someone if they're retarded

First off..you don't know what kind of problems or issues he's dealing with . So telling someone they're retarded because they're never in the same mood as you are or because they are less social is pretty damn rude.

What you could have done is made small talk first to break the ice or try to get a smile out of him by making an light hearted joke. You could have also said something positive and uplifting. This could have opened him up. Heck..you could have made a new friend.

What you said to him was blunt, presumptive, and insulting. Comments like that, I'm sure perpetuate the attitude that he carries around with him.

Well calling him retarded that was rude. If a person is distant well leave them alone. There are some out there that just wants to go to class and then leave. They have no desire to befriend others. So since this person has made this obvious, just smile if you make contact with him and leave him be.

You should maybe try to find another way to describe things without the word "like." Yes you were rude. How would you feel if someone asked you a questioned and your answer was "I don't know" so they asked if you were retarded?

Yes, I do think that was rude. If he's a really shy person, you probably just helped him crawl back into his shell.
A suggestion might be next time just say the good old fashioned..."hello...how are you? My name is....What are you majoring in this semester?" That's if you want to make friends with him. Good luck.

yes, i think that it's rude. if you're coming from a concerned perspective, you should have spoken to him in a more pleasant manner. he might be an introverted person, or maybe he's been outcasted, you don't know why. so maybe you should sit down and talk to him, or get him to start talking. maybe he will open up. good luck and do not be so blunt when you are talking to other people. it might hurt them more than you think. put yourself in his shoes. =) good luck!

I would have ask in a different way.

"I see you in class every day, but you never talk to anyone. Would you like a friend?"

You should learn to speak English. You sound retarded.

Questioning someones intelligence is ALWAYS rude, in this case it was uncalled for, If you really wanted to know you should of asked him politely, he probably wouldnt tell you though.

Your behaviour was boorish and inexcusable. You could have tried to further engage him in conversation, but apparently you were seeking an opportunity to be insulting. And you got what you wanted. I hope you sleep better tonight because of it.
