They are similar to Mormons outside of Utah, but tend to be a little more clicky and gossipy in Utah. I am Mormon and my wife is Agnostic. We moved to Utah about three and a half years ago and for the most part my wife likes it, but everyone thinks everyone else is Mormon, and it is actually the non-Mormons who are always trying to stand out and be more outspoken. If your in a professional field business is as business does in Utah and religion is not an issue (as it should be). I guess, just as you find in any religion, there are good and bad people, it just that the bad people stand out a little more and are pointed out a little more in Utah.

The "average" Utah Mormon are good and nice as the others suggest. They also are very community oriented, and also help they're neighbor regardless of faith.
However, many can be hypocritical. For example, many say the caffeine is against the word of wisdom. Although it is an addictive drug of sorts, only a lot of it can make some one dependent. Even then, if some were to quit, the worst side affect would be a head ache. However, drinks and food that contain caffeine are not against the word of wisdom, especially if they are taken in moderation. If a member, with themselves, say it's wrong; that's OK. The problem is when some start preaching that the church officially announced that it is wrong, and may even chastise others for having it. The same is true for TV, playing cards, and even sex. (even though no "watches" each other, eeeewwww!)
Over all they are very nice and SLC is very safe. But, some are very opinionated, which the church allows; and then judges or tries to forces there opinions on others. Granted, many other churches in general have the same thing.

I can't answer to what an average Utah Mormon is, but I can tell you what an average New Jersey Mormon is. I wasn't raised in the Mormon Church, which I prefer to call The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, because I have been accused too many times of not being christian. I have one wife, three girls 11, 10 and 7, and a boy on the way. I am a contractor, and have the same goals as any american, to provide a comfortable home for my family, and live a full, happy , productive life. I like to listen to the blues, play blues harmonica, would love to have a nice custom Harley some day, like to camp, etc. I converted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1986, in Santa Barbara, CA when I was 23. The only thing I will say about my beliefs is this, if we sincerely seek for the truth and ask God for answers, He will answer us.

that depends....can the average American be Mormon?
Um, exclusive of non Utah Mormons, I hear that they are hypocritical, corporate lackeys with a meth lab on every corner. Sickly women who rarely see the light of day and Racist men....but I have been there and this is not what I saw...(well ok sometimes) Stereotypes always suck, interesting sociologically but almost always mean.
People like this would stick out. But the Mormons I know are real cool smart nice folks.

I'm a "in the field" Mormon, and I think of Utah Mormons as those who don't drink anything but water, kool aid, and maybe sprite on a special occasion, their entire ward is like 2 blocks long, and the entire state is something like/close to 90+% LDS. That everyone's "ward family" is very close and they always do stuff together. In short, it's the ideal.
However, my views changed after moving into a ward where there's a lot of turnover - we get a lot of law students and every summer and fall we have a surge and every Dec we have a lot of move outs. A lot of our move ins are UT Mormons and they generally seem as normal as the rest of us. They have misconceptions about us "in the field" Mormons just as often as we have misconceptions about them.

Straight laced, smart, financially secure, big family and constantly at Church . . . are the nicer things I have heard.
BTW, Utah ranks around 3rd or 4th for the state with the highest LDS population.

Average american? Let's see...weird polygamist that is not a christian.
Me? Wonderful people who actually walk their talk, who are in my opinion a little strange (the underwear thing) and a whole lot mislead. But I like them very much anyways.

A member of a denomination that were it smaller, would definitly be called a cult. Then again, that's true of most religions.
However, Mormonism does have a reputation for excluding those who don't share the faith, keeping women and blacks subsurvient and hating gays.
