Recruit training is designed for single young men/women who are expected to make a 100% commitment to the service. Pay is low. Time off is rare. After boot camp, expect to move. Billets (jobs) are assigned by class standing and needs of the service. If he does well, he will get top choice, but the choices may not be anywhere you want to go. That's part of the hardship and richness of the Coast Guard. You must be willing to try new things in new places. If assigned to a large cutter, he will be gone 5-7 months of the year. Medium size cutters sail often, but for shorter voyages. Patrol boats are on recall status and the crew cannot be far from ship when on duty. Small boat stations work much like a fire dept, with one day on and two days off. What he decides to do (rating) also determines his duty station and work schedule. If you don't like it, leave in four years and enjoy telling stories about it for the years to come.

Ok. The countrywide shield(Air/navy) are simply state managed accessories in their federal Big Brothers if you are going to. The National shield is definately going to have extra choices and profession offerings. As a Guardist you might have entry to the entire armies MOS offerings 2 hundred+. Where within the coast shield you might have only a few access degree choices. Also the NG is providing a 20,000 greenback signal directly to the coast guards zero. As some distance as pay it simply will depend on rank however National Guard you are going to make approximately one hundred fifty$ a month as drill pay untill you're mobilized you then might recieve complete pay as an entire time soldier. CG if you're taking the reserve direction equal factor as soon as a month drill pay, but when complete , complete pay.

BElieve me , The coast guard sucks , big time. It is the smallest of the services and y ou do not attain rank or rating in there very easy. Dont let him go in the CG, his wages there will not allow you to keep that shack you live in.

My hubby was. I got tired of the moving. Just get aquainted with one town, and boom! Time to go, again. Seemed like he was more married to the Guard than married to me. Totally dedicated.

He did 20 years, would have stayed in longer, but I insisted it was time to settle down. The retirement is good.
