You are at risk with family history!! I am 33, and I have fibrocystic disease, my mother had breast cancer, and her grandmother died of breast cancer. I started getting baseline mammograms when I was 25. Seems in my family that it skips a generation. But you can't be too careful. Do your monthly breast exams, get to know your breasts and how they feel, and if ever anything feels different, get to the doctor ASAP! (oh, by the way, I am using my b/f's account, I'm not John, I am Kristina!lol)

You are not at higher risk for having breast cancer because of fibrocystic breast disease, although it may make it harder to find anything that you may have. The fact that your mother had breast cancer, especially if it was early in life, may put you at risk though.

The history definitely does. I don't know what studies there has been on cancer concerning fibrocystic lumps but I kind of have wondered about that myself too. I had fibrocystic lumps since I was about 16 and then ended up with breast cancer at 26 and it is something that I have often wondered about. The lump that they removed had the same pain in it as other fibrocystic lumps in my breast and I think that is what made me start wondering.

Yes. Be sure to get timely tests and if for any reason you suspect a lump, tell (yes, tell) your doctor you want to have a biopsy.

My daughter had fibracystic breasts for years. She found a lump. They did a mammogram and didn't find anything. They told her to come back in 6 months and they would do a biopsy. She told them to do it now. She had Stage 3 breast cancer. In six months she would have been dead! Had a mastectomy, chemo and radiation. She is a survivor - going on 5 years and doing great.

Take charge of your health.

Just the history puts you at higher risk. Please get yearly mamograms and catch your cancer early, so it can be treated without disfigurement or chemotherapy, like I did. Found early 14 years ago, and no sweat to treatment.

Stay vigilant! stay healthy!
