It's not uncommon for Soldiers to get their first duty station immediately after AIT as a unit that's already deployed, or getting ready to deploy. The Army does not send anyone "straight to combat" until they receive the proper training. Yes, you do receive soldier training during AIT, but a lot of the focus is learning to do your MOS. So, it's important that you get properly re-trained and refreshed on the skills you will need in a combat situation. As far as I've been informed, not only do you receive training before going to a combat zone, but then, in the case of this Middle East conflict, Soldiers are even sent there to a different area first to climatize and receive more training in the actual weather conditions before actually joining the rest of their unit.
