I was thinking a Mustang or an Acura TL

Yeah, probably the Mustang GT500 or
even the regular Vette. The Audi S4 is
a well-rounded performance vehicle.

You might also check out the Lotus Elise
and the Nissan 350Z with the track package.

There is no question that the two suggestions you have made are not sports cars. For something in that arena your best bet would be a Lexus IS 350. For a true sports car in this range, maybe slightly more, you need to get your hands on a Lotus Elise. Again, maybe slightly more but definatly a used one in that price range. I don't car waht anyone says, It will be one of the most fun and definately best handling cars you will ever drive in this price point. And a lot of other price points at that.

Get a Mustang. A front wheel drive car is not a sports car. But a Mustnag is a muscle car. You should try to find a Fiero 1984-1988. Mine gets 40mpg in the city. Got to love American cars.

My friend..I've owned many sport cars,some imported and mostly american..There is only one...corvette..period...for 40,000 you have a pick of the litter..new or classic...any year...there are a few models that sell way above 40,000...but your in a price range that will buy a survivor if you go old...thats a corvette term..survivor an classic thats never been modified...and in factory orginal condiditon...corvette's black book is what you'll want to buy to learn of all models...you'll find it at most book stores for about 15 dollars

You can find a decent used Porsche 911 on Ebay for around that price. It outhandles and 0-60's better than nearly everything in that price range.

Those are not sports cars. A Corvette is a Sports car. You can get a new vette for around $40,000
