whenever my pet even tries to misbehave and gets caught in the action, then i never shout back. i just sit down where ever i stood. if u share closeness with ur dog, he/she will automatically come towards you and try some of its buttering up tricks.

all u have to do then is, hold its hands just like u hold a child, and tell him in a calm but firm tone, how he/she has hurt you by its actions. if u have connected well with ur dog, then it will automatically understand.

and yes never shout back at ur pet. its the worse and most inhumane thing anyone can do.

i take my dog and hold her on my knee keeps anything else from distracting her and pat her while i talk to her . this sounds stupid but believe me she never listened to me as i didn't realize i was shouting at her cause she was getting very exited and would have jumped around the place not wanting to hear what i was saying. i talk to her all the time even when i don't want her to do anything we are so close. I know she is only a dog but she is my best friend. Now i can let her in while people are in i could never have her and them in the same room as she used to dance all over there heads. I ended up getting embarrassed shouting as i would have then tried to get her out .She is a border Collie and too big for me to have to lift. Now i just tell her to sit and she knows if she is good and does what i tell her she can stay in the room with all of us now it's great a little time and a lot of patients but it does and can work i have done it .She was so hyper and mad she used to have me crying but all that's gone now. I didn't notice before when i shouted i was making her nervous and making myself upset. Good Luck with your best friend cause when ur dog does start to listen such a change you will see for you and the dog

eye contact. you can do this with a treat. hold the treat infront of the dogs nose and then move it back and forth a bit and then to your nose. say "look" and stare right at him.
also when your dog is walking on a leash stare at its ees and every time it looks into your eyes praise it or give it a treat.

P.S.
i know this is mean but the answer a few before mine about putting the dog in another room, is B.S. so don't pay it any mind

Excercise, Discipline & Affection. In that order.

Go see episodes of the dog whisperer. Cesar Millan has great advice.

To get your pets attention, always say the dogs name before giving a command. There is no doubt who you are talking to. Of course, it's best to use one word commands, as well.

Put the dog in a seperate room away from everybody else. Then show her a treat. Give one to the dog. Once she knows that these are good then you can start training the dog easily.
P.S. Your dog won't know a trick if you didn't teach her if you don't practice it every few days...

I am the Alpha, and she has no choice but to respect that. I am not heavy with her, but you must be firm.

all dogs seek to be leader of the pack, and you must not allow it.

you are the Alpha, start acting like it.
also, praise good deeds excessively. your dog will attempt to always make you happy that way. and it will listen.

I don't do this very often, only when everything I do fails, like calling their names and they won't listen!

I whistle a lovely tune. My dogs stop what they're doing. They become curious: what is my master dong? what's that lovely tune? Then, they come closer and look at me, puzzled! Where does that lovely tune coming from? So, I laugh and hug them for listening to me.

Start practicing nilif

Also never let her not listen. Getting away with not doing a command teaches that she doesn't have to listen.

The same way I do my husband. I hug him real tight and wait for him to settle down and pay attention or else I will never let him go play!! @8=)
