its not rude to do either, as they are both natural occurrences following a build up of gases within the digestive system, to deny the fact that you fart or burp is more rude than either in my opinion, as this is an insult to others intelligence, as everyone knows it doesnt matter who you are, you will burp or fart, so why lie and pretend you dont? here's a little rhyme by robert burns the scottish poet to prove it.

Where'ere ye be
let your wind gang free
kirk or chapel
let it rattle
for the suppression o' a fart
was the death of me.

This is inscribed on his tombstone, as he died due to his bowel bursting because he held in gas during a very lengthy time in the company of the queen of england at the time, this caused him to be struck down with septiscemia which ultimately killed him, (the medicine then was quite primitive.)

I guess its pretty rude to burp cause I got thrown out of the dogtrack last year cause I was burping so loud. I tried to tell the guard that we were all having a contest to see who can burp the loudest be he really didnt think that was very funny and tried to throw me out. It was when I climed back over the fence that things got really bad. Thats when I found out it was really really bad to fart in a police car. I'll bet im the only person in Florida that was ever arrested because of burping and farting.
its a good story though.

It's more rude to burp loudly because it is possible to make a fart silent and not noticed but not a burp.

A burp is a one time thing and is forgotten.
A fart "lingers" and is remembered.
So the fart is a surely a bad thing.

I think it's interesting that in some cultures, it's actually polite to burp, to show your hostess that you enjoyed the food.

I think that makes burping less rude.
