I have this lump in my mouth under my tongue that is slightly smaller than a green pea, and i believe it first appeared a couple of years ago. I always thought it was nothing, but it recently started hurting just a little. Does anyone know if this is harmless or potential cancer?

Talk to your doctor or dentist right away. No one on here will be able to give you the correct advice. Better to be safe than sorry. I know of someone that died from oral cancer, and believe me it is a terribly painful way to die.

It could be MANY things. To give you some peace of mind, just go to the dentist or your general doctor.

Don't listen to the posters that are going to freak you out and say it is cancer. THE ONLY PERSON that can tell you that is a doctor after a few tests or a needle biopsy. The majority of problems like you describe end up NOT being cancer.

Best of luck to you!

Go to your doctor or dentist right away!! Oral cancer is nothing to mess with. I work in a pathology laboratory and I have seen severe cases of it where the surgeon has had to remove peoples lower jaws and half their face. You don't want to go through that. Plus it metastasizes fast (spreads to lymph nodes). Not saying that this is what you have, it could be a swollen or infected gland, but this is something not to be messed with. Hope all goes well.

My advise would be to go and see a really good ENT rather then a regular doctor as the ENT would be the right person to check on your problem. I would also suggest you hurry up and just get there.

My guess is that it is a clogged salivary gland but you need to get it checked out.
