Prepare on forever! Mine was custom made and we picked out the diamonds in April and ordered the ring. The place the jeweler used sent a cheap horrible looking setting (according to the jeweler). They sent it back immediately without even showing us. The 2nd time they sent a setting it had 2 small diamonds in each side like I requested, but they were J stones. My 1.5 carat diamond is a near perfect stone. The yellow stones looked so bad next to it the jeweler mailed it back and contracted with another company to make it for me. All and all, it took 4 months to get the setting in. Once they had the setting, just a week to set the stone in. But custom making is a process and I'm not entirely sure I'd go through it again--especially if I had a deadline like I wanted to propose on Vday.
I would go to a setting show. They have them quite frequently at most large jewelers and they bring in hundreds of settings. You should be able to find what you want then and there and buy it on the spot.
They might say they'll have it in 2 or 3 weeks but I'd never believe them.

My wedding band took about four weeks. It's zig-zagged like a puzzle piece to fit into the custom-made engagement ring. I'm not sure how long the engagement ring took.

For something as serious as an engagement ring, I would contact a licensed jeweler who specializes in this sort of thing. In other words, I would get estimates from several jewelers. You definitely don't want anything but quality here. Remember this, "If God be for us, who can be against us?" - Romans 8:31. Peace and God Bless.
