It's the acid burn. Think "acid peel" for your tongue. I ate so much pineapple when I was in Hawaii that my gums, tongue and lips bled for 3 days!

I eat the hell out of citrus fruits here in California. Turns out I have a slight allergy to pineapple that makes the top of my tongue hurt and swell a little. Pineapple tastes to good so I just tough it out.
My Dr. didn't think there was a remedy for it other than not eating pineapple.
We had a good laugh at that.

Pineapple contains an enzyme called bromelain, which acts as a digestive aid. Eating too much pineapple allows that bromelain to attack the mucous membranes in and around your mouth.

Bromelain is NOT citric acid.
