After the pope dies, the college of cardinals meets in the Vatican to decide on a replacement. They take ballots until one is chosen. The ballots are burned, and as long as the smoke is black, no pope has been chosen. When they choose one, the burn the ballots with a substance that turns the smoke white, indicating that we have a new pope, or as the chief of the college declares in Latin, "Habemus Papam."

The pope is elected by the cardinals during a papal conclave which occurs after the death of the Pope. The votes have to be a two thirds majority and it takes place in the Sistine Chapel.
Interesting facts:
The pope gets to choose his own name
Any Catholic can be elected Pope but it is usually a Cardinal
As soon as the Pope is elected they are dressed in the clothes - therefore they have different sizes prepared beforehand
The votes are burnt and if they are not a majority then a chemical is added to the fire to make the smoke burn black
Cardinals have to be under the age of 80 to vote

the cardinals all get together, and stay in their cells for a few days, to pray, and then they vote on pieces of paper, and they count them. if the pope has not been chosen, gray somke comes out when they burn the fire, but if they chose a pope, white smoke comes out, because they are burnning the ballots, or something. then the pope comes out on the vatican balcanny, with the crest below him. i remember when they elected pope benedict, we watched it during lunch, at school. it was so cool. the first time i ever saw that.
i like pope benedict. i think he is going to give the indult for the traditional latin mass!

All of the cardinals are brought together to the Vatican, after the pope has passed away, on a certain date to start to vote. This is done in silence. There has to be a unanimous decision, or they have to vote again.
