A German Shepherd fits what you want in a dog perfectly. Why should the image of the GSD matter?
A Pit bull almost fits what you're looking for in a dog but you are too young to be able to dominate such a strong breed.
A Beagle isn't much of a protector and they wonder a LOT. If you decide to get a Beagle, you MUST ALWAYS walk it on the lead as if they find a strong scent, as hounds, they will follow their nose - no matter how good they are trained.
A Labrador is an excellent pet for someone your age. They are very playful, intelligent, loving family pet but I'm not sure how much of a guard dog it would make. Many Labs would just jump up and lick the face of an intruder but it depends on how well socialized the dog is.
A Dobermann could make a good pet but some can be very dominating and many kids can't look after one on their own.
A Rottweiler also fits what you want pretty good. Some can be very dominating so maybe that's not the best pet for someone so young.

Remember to RESEARCH any breed you decide to buy. Also you MUST buy the dog from a REPUTABLE breeder that screens their dogs of any hereditary health problems. The dogs you have chosen can be very expensive so it will be tempting to just pay $150 for a dog from a backyard breeder but really, it's just as bad as buying from a pet store.

Many of the breeds you have listed are not recommended for inidividuals who have no dog experience. Pitbulls need proper control and training and should not be a first dog. Doberman, weimaraner and rotties are large and, therefore, potentially more difficult to manage. Rotties tend to be dominant and are definitely not a first-time dog. Why are you looking for a dog that is protective and guarding? Dogs that are used for such purposes require very special training. By getting such a dog, you are taking on a tremendous responsibility and committment. All dogs are a responsibility. You must protect and care for your dog so that no harm can come to him. You also have a responsibility to ensure your dog does no harm to others. Ask yourself honestly, what is it that you want from a dog? Do you think a pitbull or a rottie will make you look tough? No one will mess with you? Or do you want a dog for companionship and to love? The majority of dogs that end up in shelters are pitbulls, rotties and german shepards and various mixes with such breeds. There is a reason for that. Many people find that the responsibility is too great and that they are unwilling to commit the time (and money) that is needed to properly socialize and train these creatures. A beagle or a labrador involves the same responsibilities but are more suitable for people who do not have extensive experience with dogs. A beagle will tend to wander and should not be off-leash where he can follow his nose and disappear. A lab really likes to eat -- so the responsibility is to ensure that he stays fit and healthy. These responsibilities are not as burdensome as those associated with pitbulls, dobermans, weimaraners or rottweilers. This means you will have more time to appreciate and enjoy your new best friend.

Out of ur choices, beagles are the best. They are cute, and playful. Beagles come in a variety of colors and they greet you all the time. Their eyes are as innocent as can be. When they are in trouble, their eyes are an incentive for you to not punish them. I truly think that the beagle is the best pick! Good luck with your dog and I am happy to find that you are choosing a dog out of all pets since they are my favorite!

We got a puggle a few month's ago and it's a great dog. Very smart (a little too smart if you ask me), well tempered, obedient, playful, strong, active and funny.

The best thing you can do is find a reputable breeder and go meet them. Get to know the people and see how they treat the puppies and parents. Then watch an actual birth of puppies and pick a few that you like. Come back a few times and see which puppy clicks the best with you and pick that one out of the bunch!

I would go with the Doberman, but that is just my personal opinion, and I really wouldn't recommend a Lab or Weimaraner. Just be sure that if you get any dog (especially those breeds) that you start training from day one, otherwise you may have serious problems as the dog gets older. Also, you may want to try local shelters and local rescues to see if they have any of the breeds that you like.

From the choices you have listed a beagle would be an excellent family dog. They're also good for hunting. Also just wondering if you've thought about a Rhodesian Ridgeback? They're beautiful dogs.

I am very anti AKC they've quite often destroyed any breed they've touched and purpose a big change in running and affirmation. Specially inside the border collie and australian shepherd breeds. What they've performed to the GSD is a criminal offense. Give me a running bred puppy over a affirmation puppy any day of the week. This is for temperment, and potential to participate in the process they had been in the beginning created to do.

Doberman are great dogs and smart and very protective. Rotties are a good dog too, but they can get very big and be very stubborn if you don't get the upper hand with them and let them know who is boss. Weinmaraners are a good dog and probably a bit more docile than the Dobe and Rottie. Beagles are very sweet dogs, but can get barky if not given a lot of attention.

Take a look into a Norweigan Elkhound. We had one at one time that was the best dog ever...it was all the qualities you mentioned. He shed a lot...which needs to be considered so... the dog would be uncomfortable if you lived in Hawaii or the desert or something. But he was the sweetest dog, smartest, most loyal dog I have ever owned. I have felt much less safe since he has been gone. He was awesome :-).

The number one dog in the USA is a Golden Labrador so they must have all the qualities you mentioned. I wouldn't want the other ones because you don't want anyone to taunt them into a fight. A Lab is big and strong enough to protect you and love his owner too. They come in black also. That would be my pick!!
Good Luck!! @8=)
