Circuit city has the D50 on sale for about 30 more than the D40. I find alot of mixed opinions on many sites that say which is better and why just want to hear it from here before I go out there tomorrow.

If you can still find a D50, buy it. If you are going to use this camera in school, there is a good chance you will be able to borrow or swap lenses with someone. The D40 will not autofocus with older Nikon lenses and the D50 will work just fine with most autofocus lenses Nikon ever made.

Go here and read the very last line of the D40 chart, where this is mentioned.

Go here and read the Popular Photography comments on this issue:

You can also click a link to read their full review where you will read about a couple of other differences that can be taken as either good or bad, depending on what you are looking for in a camera.

If nothing else, if you have a D50, nobody will know that it's a brand spanking new camera (like the D40) and they might think you have a leg up on them. (haha)

Go to a camera shop and feel them both in your hands, as the the D40 is a bit smaller and laid out a bit differently and personal preference might just make a difference to you.

Bottom line is that Nikon introduced the D50 as an affordable option to the D70/80, but because it's a newer camera has a few features in it's make-up that means it is sometimes even considered better than the D70. The D40 is the Nikons new attempt at a dumbed down camera. It's a very basic camera- may be easier to use if you don't have any photographic skills or plan to build them. If you want to learn, and a camera that will grow with you- go the D50.

Nikon D50 is one of the easiest to grow with. You can start with it fully auto and then slowly introduce features and buy new lenses ranging from fish eye to telephoto.

The Nikon D50 body has magnificent quality- the only issue is that the standard lens is somewhat.. well... "standard". Start small but bear in mind you will want to upgrade your lens over time.

The D50 borders on proffesional and has even been rated higher than the D70... once again what pulls it back is the lens that comes as standard.

Go with the D50. With it you will have a whole host of lens options that will not work fully with the D40. IMO, the D50 is more of an enthusiast's camera than the D40 and will be better for a class where you are doing more in manual mode.

D50, the only lenses that can AF with the D40 is the AF-S series (about 6 of them each running $700 or more....

Nikon brought out D40 too soon, they're not ready to support it with resonably priced ($100-$200) lenses.

i like cameras...
if the extra features of the D50 don't outweigh the extra $30 you have to pay, then save some money and get the D40
