You can never go wrong with Ruth's Chris Steak House. If your not a meat eater you could also go to Kemo Sabe in Hillcrest for Fusion / Eclectic type food. Lastly, if your in San Diego, if you can't find something close to the waterfront, there is always Roy's in La Jolla which has great seafood. Okay, just one more, if you have never done the fondue thing, there is a place called The Melting Pot in La Jolla as well. Old Town in San Diego has some excellent Mexican food. It was the first time I had Chicken Mole. Wow! Good Luck and don't drink and drive.

The most unique thing about San Diego dining, I think, is Chef Debra Scott. I don't live in San Diego, so whenever I travel there I try to go to one of here three restaurants:
1) Kemo Sabe, up in Hillcrest, is southwestern. Try the ravioli, or one of the huge salads, but save room for the chocolate lava cake for desert.
2) Indigo Grill in Little Italy, kind of mexican but in a way you could never describe. Plank salmon, huge thick pork porterhouse, salads, pastas.
3) Island Prime, on Harbor Island. Steaks, seafood.

All are incredibly good, and beautifully decorated with impeccable service.

Like Sea food? The Red Sails Inn on Shelter Island is terrific.

Like Italian? Paisano's in North Park on 30th south of University is the best.

Great place for breakfast. The Coffee shop next to the pro shop at Balboa Park Golf Course. One of SD's best kept secrets. Great view of downtown.

Casa de Pico in Grossmont center for Mexican. Use to be at the Bazaar del Mundo in Old Town.

If you are new to the area you will be around the downtown. Restaurants that are easy to find and recommended by locals are
Antony's: seafood
Filippi's: Italian
Dobsons: continental
Flemming's: steakhouse

These are just suggestions because there are so many good places around town. Old town has so many great Mexican restaurants that it's hard to recommend,....Enjoy!
