First off, are you a boy or a girl? Guys tend to run about a minute faster for the mile. Plus, freshman girls often are quite fast--even faster than their senior counterparts, because their bodies often haven't quite developed yet and thus have a more efficient footstrike (those hips can get in the way!) In the state where I grew up, the girl's state high school cross-country champion is often an eighth-grader or freshman.

For guys, sub-5:30 should get you on a freshman squad. Sub-5 would make you varsity. For girls, try around 6:20. Something in the 5:50s would make you varsity on many teams.

Oh, and stay off the chicken bacon and whoppers. Doesn't burn off easily when training. ;-)

You didn't put your mile time you run now or if you have been running at all. From experience for freshman at my high school to run track they all ran under a 5:30. At some other schools ive either ran for and knew they all ran in the 4:50's. I ran in the 4:50's when i was in the eighth grade. Lets say if you can run under a 5:30 you have a good chance and if you can do close to 5 or just below 5 you should make the team for sure. Next time do post your mile time or if you have been training and were you live cause it does matter so itll make it eaiser to know what you should run.

You didn't say if you have been doing any running, or if you have any idea what your current ability is. If you have noticed that you have more ability than most all of your friends when you run in PE or soccer, then maybe you might be OK doing HS track. But if you are of just average ability, I would recommend that you consider running with your Middle School track team, if you have that option. Most 9th graders can not even begin to compete with 12th graders, unless that 9th grader is one in a thousand that has great ability, so it is unlikely that you will be allowed to run in meets, unless your team is very short handed. If you get to run, you will run in "extras" races. My daughter did 9th grade track with the middle school, and she had a great experience. She was able to beat some other girls, and improved every week. If she had run HS track, she probably would have gotten discouraged.

In the mean time, go out and time yourself in the mile or 1600 which most schools run now, just to see where you are. If you haven't been running you are not going to run a fast time, but find out what you can do, and I would consider talking to your middle school track coach. Don't talk to the HS coach and the middle school coach at the same time because in some schools there is animosity between coaches who have to compete for the same runners (the good 9th graders.)

anything under 5 minutes is very elite for girls, and those times are rare for freshmen. it all depends on how good your high school team is, and how much you've been training. you really can't compare yourself to seniors who are three or four years older and have had much more experience.
i'm on the freshman team at school, and i run a 6:10, since our distance/xc team isn't the best.
however, i think if you run anywhere from 6:10 to 6:00, you're average, and then anything under 5:45 is pretty good.
that's if you're running a freshman race.
the varsity girls in my county are pretty much all under 5:35.
