Your local volunteer center might be able to help you connect with projects that match up with your interests and meet real community needs. I've worked alongside volunteers as young as 5 on various projects. Some of the things we accomplished were:

Doing crafts for our troops, seniors, and the local children's hospitals
Packing food at the community food bank
Cleaning our local parks and beaches
Sorting books and other donations for local libraries and shelters

You can find all sorts of fun community service projects through your volunteer center. Here's how to find them:

If no centers exist in your immediate area, try your local chapter of the United Way. They also provide volunteer matching services.

Good luck.

Sounds like a great and fun project for school! Try doing some community service within your community. If you live in a house, maybe you and your son can gather up some of his friends, and everyone participate in cleaning up the living area, such as debris on the street, in the yards, leaves, etc. It's fun, economical, because it cost no money, and it's within the safety of your living area where you can still take pics of the children while they are picking up the debris, etc. It gives you plenty of information for the report because you all improved your immediate living area within your community. If you reside in an apartment, there is usually a clubhouse where you can do some activities up in there, where you sponsor and "Arts and Crafts Day" for about 2 hours of activities that everyone within that community can participate within. It might cost some money, but just for the supplies or the types of activities you all will be enjoying. You can take pictures of everyone there and have a great amount of information to do the report on. Another thought is to just wash some cars in your neighborhood. Try to gather at least three volunteers, make it a 2 hour event where you all wash at least 4 cars. Take pictures as everyone washes the cars, and that gives you room for the report to talk about the effort and support your community showed. Just some thoughts...Enjoy and be Safe...(smiles)

Take a couple trash bags with you and clean along the highways. Of course try one that is not busy when you are out there. Then he can write a report on the things he finds. like in NY, soda and beer cans are recyled so if you take them to a redemption center you can get 5cents per can. He can tell how much money he made. He can write on what he found the most of. like the cans, McDonald wrappers. coins. hubcaps. Tell of the strangest item he found,.tell of something he thinks is worth keeping. Make sure he wears gloves.
