Well I work at a grocery store and we are supposed to ask if the person wants a carry out after an order. And I didn't for this one person. My assisatant manager (manager at the time) says "why didn't you ask if they wanted a carry out: and I said back to him "that person looked like a healthy patriotic American and I think they could handle it themselves". He got all pissed.

Later that night when I left I changed then clocked out too. He said: "Don't do that i'm not paying you to change" and I said "everyone does it so why can't I". He just got pissed and walked away.

Do you think I should apologize to him. I'd prefer not to loose my job, but at the same time don't really care because it is a crappy mimimum wage job.

It was pretty funny wize comments but disrespectful too.

Also, the assistant manager is bipolar.

Apologize. If you broke the rules it doesn't matter that others do. Always do the right thing and you will not have any issues.

I punched a time clock for a long time, and the proper way to do it is to punch in when you are ready to go on the floor. Punch out when you leave the floor. He is right! You aren't being paid to change your clothes.

And if you forgot to ask the customer if they wanted a carry out, you should have said so, not given your manager a smart remark. You have a lot to learn about the real world. Working with the public is a very valuable way of learning how to treat other people. It will help you throughout your whole life.

Apologize to your manager, and after this, do what is right!

I wouldnt apologize, but I would recommend whenever he says this stuff just agree or say nothing, or ok life will be easier on you that way, the only reason I can see the first example being wrong is your job is to ask not judge, plenty of people look ok that arent and you never know it could be like a mystery shopper and it would look bad on the manager if the co moto was not being followed your right its a minimum wage job and if you want out education is the key

A bipolar assistant manager... yep, that's retail!
If you are concerned how to handle this situation, practice what you need to cover (carry notes if need be) and ask the manager how you should handle the assistant manager getting so upset at you for things that seem trivial or when you feel singled out and corrected for what everyone else does in your same position.

Sometimes it is hard to say (verbally) "I am sorry"
Choose a message card and write down your mistake to him and put it on his desk. When he reads it he'll know what type of heart you really have in you and will appreciate the manly why of admitting your mistake. Each time he will look at you he will be reminded of decency of your apology note, and that's a plus..

There's two other actions you can do. If you see that same customer again, make sure you really offer to assist him, and pray that this situation with your boss will be the solve peacefully. Good luck.

If it's on your mind, and you think that your job might be jeopardized by your comments, mention it to him and say that you didn't intend to be disrespectful (this doesn't necessarily entail an apology). Alternately, you can start looking for another job if you are just unhappy about working with a stressful manager.

You won't have this job too long, so you don't really need to worry about it. You were rude, disrespectful and insolent to your boss. Either do the job right or be prepared to get another job really soon.

And how funny was your comment, really? It just sounded lazy to me.
